Chapter Six

My eyes started to wander under my eyelids and suddenly opened to a bright light. I heard a voice calling from a distance; I opened my eyes slowly and used my hand to block the light as I leaned up from where I was laying. Suddenly, my hand touched a bed sheet and I pushed off the bed in shock. I looked around the room I was in and saw Car lying in a bed across from me. From what I could tell, I was standing in the room I stayed in at the foster home. I tried to wake Car up and he refused to move and turned to the other side on his bed. I reached for my jacket on the head board and walked out of the room throwing it around my body. I began to trot down the stairs and looked around the quiet and vacant rooms. There was quite a bit of light entering each window and the lights seemed to grow brighter. There was only several places where there was darkness and those drew my attention. One corner in the back hallway was not lit with the light. I cautiously walked towards it and saw a dark door and began to reach to the knob and turn it. My hand turned the knob at a steady pace, but I pushed the door open rapidly and light burst through again and I immediately threw my hands to my face. When I squinted to look around I began coughing and noticed there was a fire blazing through the room. I tried to turn around and go back through the door behind me but the door was gone. I quickly began shuffling through the room looking for a hollow part of the wall that would cave in. In the corner of the back wall, I shoved against it and when tumbling into the next room where the fire grew. I continued to run through a hall that continued to grow and finally I reached a door that I dove through. Before I realized it, I passed out.

Once again, I had awaken with subtle eyes. I pushed myself off of what felt like dirt and noticed the stairs I had rolled down running from the fire that was still escalating. I knew I couldn't get back out the door. I lifted myself off the ground and looked around again and my eyes were interpreting what appeared to be a bomb shelter or basement. My basement.

There was a knock on the basement door and I looked up at Asha.

"Hey!" she said leaning over me, "Are you alright? You sounded like you were having a nightmare."

I leaned up as she backed away and I noticed that I was in the train car heading to Drop Harbor. I looked at Asha and then quickly rushed my eyes to the door that Car was coming through.

"Morning sleepy head," Car said closing the train car door, "What were you dreaming about last night?"

"It was nothing," I answered rubbing my face a little bit. I stood up and looked out the window to see the sign for Drop Harbor Station.

The train pulled its brakes and we all walked towards the doors to step off. I looked to my left at where the sign was as Car and Asha stood in front of me stretching. I began to walk towards the sign and they caught up to my pace.

"Uh...no offense Evan but where are we going exactly?" Car questioned moving his head around frantically.

"We don't exactly have a game plan here," Asha pointed out as they stopped abruptly when I swiftly turned towards them.

"I know!" I screamed as there was a pause. I took a breath, "I know. I'm sorry, I'm not sure what I am doing okay? Just hang in there with me for a little while longer."

I began to walk on as they noticed we were heading towards the high school. Class was still in session and I knew I would be able to catch one student still in the lab.

Asha and Car maintained pace behind me as we walked into the school with a direct path to the science labs. I skipped steps up to the second floor as the bell rang and the three of us began to be slammed by student traffic. I weaved my way through and Asha and Car weren't too far behind as I approached the science lab door and glanced in the window. To my relief, Mark was still in there.
