This story is based in a world where technology is absent and fairytale creatures exist. Picture it like a beautiful dreamland from another time. Vic is a birdman who is in his late 20's and Kellin is a mermaid about to turn 18. This story will change points of view as needed to show both sides of their stories but will mostly be aimed towards Kellin.

Vic's POV

I was absolutely fascinated by the way the sea sparkled each night under the light of the moon. It was as if there were a thousand jewels all floating around in the water. I felt totally at peace here. My parents didn't approve of me strolling the beach each night. They thought I was searching for something I could never attain, and maybe they were right. I've never felt quite right here. I have never felt like I belonged in the sky with the others. As a teenager I would read every book I possible could on the sea and I was totally captivated by it. I wished I could live under it with it's beautiful creatures.

Of course this wish is totally unrealistic. I mean, I wasn't meant for the sea. I had hollow bones and the wings of a bird. I was considered the most beautiful of my species. My feathers were all shades of white and grey, going from light to dark in a sort of ombre. I resembled more of an angel than the others of my species. Some of us had beaks, others had bird feet. I was lucky enough to be mostly man with the gift of gorgeous wings gracing the backs of my arms. They would sparkle in the daylight similar to the sea. I often wore capes to hide them, though, since human women can be quite mesmerized by me to an obsessive point.

My wings were powerful, too. I could fly faster than anyone in the sky dome. I was strong enough to carry the heaviest of packages from one end of the earth to the other in just one night. I was the best messenger in the world.

You see, the only way to send packages anymore is to use the service us birdfolk have created. Humans wouldn't be able to get along without us. We also provide emergency services to the humans, in exchange for peace among each other. Many years ago we weren't accepted by the humans. Instead of treating us like the beautiful angels we are, they thought of us as mutant bird freaks. They tried to kill us all.

Humans are still beasts like they were back then, just less so. They think of mermaids as prizes to win. They will capture them and keep them away from the sea until sickness takes over them. Eventually they all either die or lose their mer-powers forever. You rarely see a mermaid anymore.

It was nearing midnight as I dug my bare feet into the sand and let the water wash over my ankles. This was the only time I felt I could take off my cape and let my wings out on land. They were big, the entire length of my body in fact. I was still in messenger pants and white button up from being at the post office all day.

I was at an unpopular beach in the small village of Covington. Not far from here was a harbor, but that's not reason for this beach being unpopular. It's because there's legend of siren who sings upon the rocks off in the water nearby. When humans hear a siren's song, it will cause them a type of hypnosis. They end up walking deep into the ocean and being washed away by the under-toe. I never needed to worry about this, though, because birdfolk aren't affected by siren songs. No matter how beautiful they may be, we are far too intelligent to be hypnotised so easily.

Kellin's POV

I was hiding in some blue and green coral just beyond the outskirts of our sea village. My tail blended with the coral almost perfectly, aside from the shine of my scales which could be a dead giveaway if someone were to look too closely at the coral. My hair was flowing in all directions due to the current today, which didn't help my camouflage much.

I was hiding from my little sister, Ellie. It was past curfew and the sharks would be coming around any minute, but I desperately didn't want to go home. I knew Ellie would be searching for me, but I also knew she would give up eventually. Going home meant facing my parents. Tonight was the night they wanted me to tell them what I wanted for my eighteenth birthday next week. I just knew they wouldn't approve of my wish, but it was all I wanted. I wanted to see the land. I wanted to breathe in the air that humans breathe and climb up grassy hills, buy things in the shops, experience a new life.
