A few months later, everything has changed. I was wrong. She wasn't okay.
I headed down the high street, walking side by side with Zach, pushing Lucy...in her wheelchair.
She was smiling. She always has, all the way through this traumatic experience. She's so strong, and I'm so proud.
"Frankie and Benny's, B?" she asks, turning her head to face me, with the sweetest smile appearing on her face. I smile back.
"Of course, how could she say no" Zach chuckles, receiving a goofy grin from Lucy.
Although she's smiling, I know she's hurt inside. Nothing will be the same for her. I wish that I could have been there for her, but it was too late. Lucy, my Lucy. She was never going to be the same and that hurt me. She'd always be my Lucy, our Lucy but how cruel can the world be to do that to her..our Lucy. It's not fair.
Everything was silent from the walk to the restaurant from the high street. I walked in first, followed by Zach who pushed in Lucy in her wheel chair. I could tell that this had broken his heart, but he wouldn't show it. He pushed her over to a table, and pressed the breaks on her wheelchair with his foot before sitting opposite her. I awkwardly sat next to Zach, handing out menus.
Our whole meal was basically in silence, it wasn't like it was before. It used to be lively and we'd always be laughing and joking around but not anymore. I thanked the waitress and left tips on the tray, putting my debit card back into my purse. I followed Zach and Lucy out of the restaurant.
"It's alright Zach, I got it" I say, stepping forward to grab the handles on Lucy's chair.
"Nah, B, it's cool I've got it""Zach, if you just let me-"
"Becky I said I've got it"
"Just let go and let me push her"
"All right, enough!" Lucy yelled, instantly making me jump "I'm not a fucking toy. Does it look like I want to be in this situation? Where I have to rely on someone to push me around everywhere? Because I really don't, so just quit it already. I can do it on my own"
"Lucy" I sigh, looking at her
"I said I can do it, Becky. Just leave me alone the both of you, yeah?" she scoffs, before hesitantly wheeling herself away from us.
I look at Zach, to see a rather furious look on his face "Look what you've done, you couldn't just leave it could you?" he growls, looking away.
"I only wanted to help out, you shouldn't be responsible all of the time"
"Just give it a rest Becky, does it really matter? Does it really?" he walks to the edge of the pavement.
"Zach-" I grab his hand, spinning him around.
"Just, stop Becky" he says, whipping his hand away from mine before crossing the road, pulling up his hood. I look around, seeing a rather empty street. No one.
Arriving back at my apartment I threw my keys onto the carpet, sliding down the back of the door. I cupped my face in my hands, starting to cry. God, I'm a mess, what would mum think of me if she saw me like this?
