The sound of humming pulls me from my slumber. Surprisingly, it isn't bright when I do so. In fact, it's really dark.

Unfortunately, the only sight I see is Doc leaning over me.

Doc...that's not good. Wasn't he just strapped to a chair? About to die?

Vervain...Damon...shit.

That's right, we were drugged and kidnapped.

Doc flicks the needle in front of me, allowing a few drops to fall on my face. The stinging makes me wince.

Vervain. No, I'm not letting that happen again.

With the strength I muster, I force myself to sit up and lunge for his neck.

I'm frozen in my spot when the sharp pain pricks my neck. The vervain is immediately distributed, and I can feel my vampire face already disappearing. It's not enough to knock me out, but it is overwhelming.

"No..." I mumble out as I fall on my back again. "What are you..."

Doc lets out a breath he'd been holding. I guess he wasn't expecting me to fight back. "Vervain," he explains, "to calm you down. Damon's next."

"Why us?" I manage to grunt out. I can't force myself to move.

"I lost a test subject last night," Doc sighs before standing tall. "Damon's his replacement. You, on the other hand, are a twin. Once I get your sister, I'll be able to explore a whole new side of biological vampirism."

He's going after Elena too? Wait, last night? How long have Damon and I been here?

"That's...really stupid," I mumble as my eyes slowly shut. I can hear the clanking of what I assume to be my cell closing.

I can hear Doc walk away, but I can also hear Damon breathing in the next cell over.

"Don't close your eyes," he suddenly mumbles. "You'll fall asleep."

"I think a nap would be nice," I sigh, continuing to stare at the ceiling. "Maybe we can sleep it off."

"Come here," he says, his voice suddenly sounding a little closer.

    "Damon, I can't break through a wall."

"No, idiot, over here." I force my head to turn only to see a mini window with bars in the corner. I let out a groan at the thought of having to move from my spot, but do it anyway.

I'm lying on my stomach when I finally make it to him, and I see he is too. The stone beneath us is cold, but not too uncomfortable. Damon's neck is covered with dry blood, but it's healed. Damon looks pale and a little sickly, likely from the vervain, and I'm sure I look the same.

"Hey," I greet quietly, not sure what we're supposed to do.

    "You okay?" He questions.

"Yeah," I mumble back and lay my head on my arms. "how about you?"

"Peachy," he remarks before doing the same.

Seeing him so defeated reminds me of his revelation from last night. "You've been here before," I remind. "This whole Augustine bullshit—you've done it before." But it's not something he's ever mentioned or even bragged about. Whatever Damon went through wasn't pretty. "Are we gonna be okay?"

He's quiet for a few moments. I have to move my hair from my face to see him better. He's staring at the ground, refusing to make eye contact with me right now.
