Chapter Seventeen

Elena isn't doing too good.

In a typical Katherine fashion, the bitch couldn't die without a fight. Before she met her demise, she injected herself (Elena's body) with Wes's cannibal virus. Elena now has an intense, deadly craving for vampire blood.

But we won't let that happen. We can't. We've already failed my sister once, we won't do it again.

Bonnie's new witch friend had to learn a boundary spell to keep Elena trapped in her dorm. She gets a slightly better treatment than Damon, but she's still trapped. Can't have her killing us now, can we?

Stefan gave me a ride to Whitmore so we could see her together.

"Do you think she'll forgive us?" I ask as we step out of his tiny car. We're just outside of Elena's dorm. It's Spring Break, thankfully, so we don't have any casualties to worry about.

"She's Elena," Stefan reminds with a small smile. "She'll always forgive. Making it up to her however..."

"We're the worst," I sigh. "I'm the worst."

"Hey," Stefan says, abruptly grabbing my hand. I'm forced to stop our journey to Elena. "You're not the worst, okay? Even with your twin superpower, you couldn't have known." He squeezes my hand and I do feel a sense of relief. "Okay?"

"Yeah." I nod and squeeze back. "Yeah." I give a grateful smile. Through thick and thin, Stefan has always been here for me.

I can't help but smile. He's still holding my hand. He's still looking at me with reassurance. He's still comforting me like he always does.

"Thank you, Stefan," I say before letting go of his hand. Hopefully, this sudden feeling goes away with it. Still, I almost feel giddy. It's familiar but...

"Elena's upstairs...waiting for us," I say. I take a step backwards as Stefan gives a tight smile.

It only takes a few moments to make it to the second floor of Elena's dorm. Caroline gives us a greeting smile as she walks past us. We just relieved her of Elena watch duty. It looks like we made it in time for Elena to wake up.

She's wandering the hall by herself, stopping once she sees us. "Gabby! Stefan!" She calls out and rushes toward us. She stops just before the barrier. I don't know if she knows about it yet. "What are you doing here? Where is everyone?"

"Spring break," I clarify with a smile. Stefan and I don't move closer.

"You've been in and out since you first woke up," Stefan adds.

Elena gives a relieved smile. "Oh. Okay, yeah, that makes sense." She shakes her head before stepping closer to us. "I thought I was going crazy—"

She pauses once she realizes she can't get through. She frowns at me, and I can tell she's worried, before she palms the empty space.

"What's going on?"

I look over at Stefan. One of us has to break the news, just as all of us had to since Elena first woke up. Her memory's a little frazzled after the incident.

"We had to seal you into the building," Stefan explains, making Elena frown. "We have a lot of catching up to do."

Elena looks confused, understandably. I don't think she knows where to begin.

"What's the last thing you remember?" I offer. Please don't tell me you've been conscious while Katherine took over your body.

"I was...running through the woods, and my head felt like it was being attacked by Katherine's whole life. Then I saw Damon, I threw my arms around him and...and nothing."
