      Chapter 7

Jeff stood in silence watching the girl as she hurried about her kitchen. Rayne had offered to make him food. He couldn't refuse so he just leaned against the wall and watched. He watched the way she moved. Very smoothly. He was taken away by the way she walked. So graceful. Jeff took a deep breath in. The air smelt of cooking vegetables and meats. It was the most delicious sent Jeff had smelt in a very long time. He closed his eyes and let his thoughts get lost amongst the swirling smells. A smile spread against his face.

When Jeff opened his eyes Rayne was standing two feet away from him. Glaring at him with her fascinating eyes. "Are you going to eat? Or are you going to just stand there all day?" she smirked. Jeff shook his head of his mixed thoughts and made his way over to the table. It was nicely set. It was almost perfect. The utensils and the plates were placed exactly right. Jeff was dumbfounded. He hadn't eaten at a set table in a really long time.

Jeff sat down and Rayne served him food. Spaghetti and steamed Vegetables. Rayne to her seat across the table. "So Jeff. Where are you from?" where was he from? He didn't want to tell her. "Well I used to live with my family." He shivered at the memories. Rayne cocked her head. "Are you still living with them now? If not what happened?" Jeff couldn't lie to her. He tightened his fist around his fork. "No. I'm not living with them anymore. As for what happened.... They were murdered." Rayne gasped. "Oh! I'm so sorry for asking!" Jeff laughed. "No. It's fine. You were just curious." He took a bite of his food.

Rayne blushed, "Well now you can ask me some questions." She shifted shyly in her seat. Jeff sat up and smiled, "Okay, let's see," He pushed around a piece of broccoli on his plate, "What do you like to do? I'm not trying to be creepy or anything." Rayne let out a small giggle, "Well I like getting into trouble and long walks to the fridge." They both laughed.

Rayne stood to clear the table, it was then Jeff realized how worn out she looked. "Hey, are you okay?" even know he had just met her he was genuinely concerned. She shrugged, "Yeah, I'm just a bit tired, I haven't been sleeping well lately." she sat back down, shoulders drooped. Jeff leaned back in his chair, using his leg to save him from falling over. "I don't mean to pry, But can I ask why you can't sleep?"

"Do you really Want to know? It will sound really cheesy." she laughed. Jeff leaned back on the table, feeling the cold metal of his utensils caress his hands. "I'm all ears."

Rayne started by telling Jeff about how her parents had gone missing, and how her little brother had passed away from cancer. She told him about how she was all alone, and how she was somehow managing to go to school and work enough to pay for the house. Jeff just stared into her mesmerizing Blue eyes. He loved the way she talked and how she was so direct.

Rayne stopped speaking, And Jeff was baffled by her story. Her parents had gone missing almost a year ago and her little brother had died not long after they left. She had, had a hard time but she still managed too pull through. He envied her. She was so strong, so beautiful. Jeff evaded his eyes and drew himself out of his deepening thoughts. "Wow, you have had it tough." Rayne nodded "Yes I have. But I have also been terrified." Jeff tilled his head, "Terrified? But why?"

                                 ~

It had started to rain again and Jeff could hear the pitter patter of the rain drops hitting the roof. It was kind of soothing. After hearing about the horror of Rayne's life. Her parents, Her brother. Gone. She had lost them. Just like he had lost his. Except she hadn't murdered hers in cold blood. He stared down at his hands. He was shaking. He was frightened. Frightened for Rayne. Frightened for her Future.

Rayne looked at him "Are you okay Jeff? You look like you have seen a ghost or something." Jeff shook his head, "Yeah, I'm okay. Don't worry about it." She sat up straight. "Well if your okay, I would like to ask you something." She twiddled her thumbs in anticipation. He grinned showing his teeth. They were some what sharper then they should be. "Well then, Tell me what you want to know."

Rayne leaned forward in her seat and whispered,  "Do you ever get, like, dreams about your family? About how they were murdered?" Jeff was startled, He stared into her jewel like pools for a couple of seconds and the he said, "Yes, every night." Rayne cocked her head, "What are they like? What do you see?" Jeff looked down at his hands in his lap "I....I see my family bloody on the floor, flashes of the deep rosy read everywhere. I usually have a knife in my hand, like I was the murderer." Of coarse he held the knife, he was the one that killed his family after all. His vision flashed back to that night. The irony smell of blood filled his nostrils. He put his head in his hands, and let out a sigh.

By the time Jeff had finished the story of his dreams, the sound of rain on the roof had subsided. Rayne looked at him with sympathy. "Well," She said "I should probably clean up." She stood up and started collecting plates again. Jeff too grabbed a couple and brought them into the kitchen, "Thankyou for the meal Rayne, I haven't eaten like that in ages." She turned and once again shot a brilliant smile at him. "Your welcome, to be honest it's been a while since I had company." They both laughed and continued on with the cleaning.

After they were done Jeff stood by the door, He thanked Rayne once again for cooking him his meal "Thanks again for the meal." Rayne motioned her arm to the backpack of food on the counter, "Aren't you forgetting something?" He shrugged, "I can't take that now." Rayne looked confused, "Why not?" Jeff laughed, "Well for one you caught me stealing, And secondly after you made me that meal I would feel guilty taking more food from you." Rayne shook her head, "Nonsense!" she said shoving the back pack in to Jeffs Chest, "Take it." He reluctantly took the bag from Rayne. "Well thanks....again." He stepped out of the door and waved good bye.
