“I wish you were the one you got away”
Civil Wars, The one that got away
His bright blues eyes wandered around the large courtroom, where everyone was standing breathless waiting for the Prosecutor to announce the verdict. Mr. Garrison, the most prominent constitutionalist of the country, who was sitting ceremoniously on the bench with another dozen of lawyers the King had hired for her sake, nodded at him reassuringly.
The whole process lasted for more than five hours. Both sides presented evidence, such as documents, contracts, information from the Queen’s bank accounts, and archives from her personal computer, and examined thoroughly the witnesses, all proving that the allegations against her were inaccurate.
He searched the defendant at the other side of the room and a wave of pride came through his chest. She had fight for her freedom like a lioness, proving to everyone that she was a fearless lawyer and a powerful orator.
Earlier that morning, when she saw her entering the courtroom accompanied by two policewomen, his heart broke into million tiny pieces. Nothing on her reminded the stylish and dreadful Queen he knew. Roselyn was a shadow of herself. Still dressed in the same clothes she left the palace four days ago, with large black circles around her eyes and lips dehydrated, she seemed ill and disoriented. Exhaustion mixed with fear was evident in her characteristics and she had lost more than twenty pounds.
Instinctively and completing ignoring the protocol, he had jumped from his seat and locked her inside his embrace, covering her completely and feeling almost every bone of her spine. There she belonged, entangled in his embrace, protected from the hatred and the enmity. From all the places in the world, there, in his arms, was stability, safety, and it felt like home. He felt her responding and his feet melted. Roselyn had placed her head on his firm chest and inhaled deeply his scent mixed with his expensive cologne. He leaned his head and kissed her forehead and temple, ignoring everyone else
“Rose…,” he tried to explain, but the words were failing him. “It wasn’t me… I… I could never do this to you.”
Roselyn, for the first time after so long, gave him a genuine smile and stared at him with her brown expressive eyes that soothed his soul. He was dapper and well groomed in his black suit, but the signs of fatigue were patent on him as well.
“I know,” she murmured softly. Her fingertips touched the edge of his jaw affectionately and he closed his eyes to savor the feeling. “I’ve spoken to Mr. Hudson before I entered the courtroom. He explained. Thank you for what you’ve done. I’m really grateful.”
And then, he saw it. There was a thin red line marked on her right cheek that he traced with his index finger. He also noticed that around her wrists, restrained together with the solid handcuffs, there were also bruised marks.
