Keegan was adorned with simple blue jeans, brown cowboy boots, and button down and a slight smile confident curving across his lips. He surprised me with his gentleman like qualities when meeting my 'parents' and how he was so sly about every single little thing as if nothing could break his bliss at the moment. After an endless period oh just ten minutes, it was time to go. As we exited the house, I saw a lifted, aged red Jeep place in the driveway, Keegan was spinning keys around his finger.
"You drive? but how were freshman?" I asked knowing that just like any other place, you had to be sixteen to obtain a drivers license.
"Well so see, some stupid fluke held me back in Kindergarten, which is basically the stupidest to ever be held back in, so ya I turned sixteen about three weeks ago." I could tell he wasn't to please about the whole kindergarten situation, and I wasn't to pleased about missing his birthday due to the accident.
"Well isn't that a shame." My hand was cupping my opposite arm and my eyes were shifted down towards the concrete, direct signs that I was nervous, I could only hope that he didn't notice.
"Well at least I have this beauty, " He said pointing toward the jeep His grabbed the passenger handle and swiftly opened the door, "After you miss Haley."
I blushed, while hoisting myself. "Thank you." He smiled and nodded before closing the door returning to the drivers seat, "Where are we going by the way?"
One hand on the wheel, he replied, " Well you're just going to have to wait and see, after all, curiosity killed the cat didn't it?" I didn't reply, I just let the sounds of whatever was playing on his radio seep into my ears.
About twenty minutes later, we ended up traveling on a dirt road up the side of a small hill, "What in the world, are you kid napping me or something?"
Keegan smirked which heightened my fears, "Of course not, just be patient ok? We're almost there, I promise." and he was right because just five minutes later, we rolled up to a small field my flowers dotted all around. "He were are." Keegan reached behind his seat first grabbing my crutches then a few blankets and a small basket.
" What are we doing up here?" I asked while he walked around the car.
"We're going on a picnic silly. After closing the door behind me, he walked out into the direct middle of the field, placed the blanket down, and yelled, "Are you coming?"
I was still far behind due to my leg. By the time I finally caught up, Keegan had taken out all the food, it appeared that we were having simple sandwiches and mac n cheese for dinner, "Dig in, " Keegan said after I was safely seated besides him a few feet separating us. He picked up a sandwich and spoke, "So miss Haley, having fun so far?"
The hill provided and amazing view of the city which i couldn't help but gaze at, "This is kinda amazing Keegan." I heard him chuckle, "Please tell me, what prompted this whole gesture?"
"What? A boy can't do a nice thing for a pretty girl."
His sentence made my face become fiery, "I know theres gotta be some deeper reason?" at least I was hoping there was.
"Well, uh." He paused and looked away from me, towards the glowing lights of the city, "I guess you kinda caught my eye on that first day in homeroom, you were pretty much the only one who noticed me, and then when you got in your accident and the whole school was filled with buzz about you, it was pretty hard to get my mind to stop wandering to thinking about you. Well, and then I saw your scars which to be honest shocked me, after that I knew you deserved to be treated to something special and well, now were here." He was propped up on one bent arm with his eyes shifted down as a smile began to appear.
His words had made me feel special in a cheesy romantic novel kind of way, was just weird? I started to rub my arms as the wind was making goose bumbs rise due to the coldness, "Are you cold?" Keegan asked. I nodded. Swiftly hoisting himself up, Keegan grabbed the one extra blanket and covered my arms brining a smile to my face.
"Thank you."
"Of course."
After we finished, we laid down on the blanket still separated by closer than before. "Isn't it beautiful?" I asked my eyes gazing at the stars above.
"It sure is. Tell me one thing ok?"
"And whats that?"
I looked back to see that he had rolled closer to me, inches separating us, "Has a pretty girl like you ever been kissed?"
I knew the answer was no which to me was embarrassing, Looking down, I shook my head. Before I knew it, Keegan had moved even closer than before, his eyes stared directly into mine without hesitation or second guessing, we stayed like this for a while before I closed my eyes and a single tear drifted out of my eye yet I wasn't quite sure why. I felt Keegan's thumb rub softly against my skin to remove the tear and then suddenly, just as if time had stopped, I felt his lips join with mine, ever so lightly. His hands cupped the side of my face as we fell deeper into the kiss. I began to think about how insanely awkward this must look from the outside, I mean to teenagers laying in the middle of an abandoned field kissing, how cliche, but in that moment I didn't really care, all I cared about at this moment was being filled with pure bliss.
I felt Keegan pull away, and as he did, his lips made their way into a smile, "Well wasn't that a hell of a first kiss." A fiery blush rose to my temples.
"Why yes it was." We rolled back on to our backs for a few more minutes pointing at stars and making small conversation, our hands finding each other somewhere in the middle of us, but eventually it was time to go. He packed up the rest of the food, folded one of the blankets seeing as the other one still surrounded my shoulders. We made our way back to the car and eventually back to my house. As we arrived, I spoke again, "Thank you so much for this, it was sorta amazing."
He put the car in park, "Well thank you miss Haley." He leaned in kissing me one last time before coming to open my door for me.
"Goodbye." I said. He smirked and nodded. I made my way to the front door not even realizing his blanket still surrounded me. I opened my mouth as to tell him but it was to late, the only thing I saw was his head lights reversing out of my drive way as the perfect night was coming to a perfect end.
