No school today.
No worries today.
One of the biggest events in anyone and everyone's life.
The Choosing Ceremony will be at noon, and it is 11:30. I'm wearing the dress my mother wore to hers. A pencil skirt that is red and a tight yellow shirt, and it looks like a business woman's suit. It is almost time to leave, so I braid my hair into a bun.
"You look beautiful," my mother says from behind me.
"Thank you." I nod and walk downstairs. My father and sister and ready. Hadley is wearing a flowing red shirt and tight yellow pants.
"Are you ready?" My father asks. His eyes are red, and he looks like he has been crying.
"Yes," I say. The truck honks and my sister opens the door and we all walk out. We climb into the back, and we slowly go into the city, stopping at every house, and the truck getting fuller every stop we make. A tough girl at my school climbs on the board, her name is Sylva. Her dad gets on after her, and he looks drunk. I feel bad for them, and everyone in Amity does. The last stop is my best friend, Corban. He gets on with his parents and sits next to me. He has always had a small crush on me.
"Are you nervous?" He asks me.
"You are the fourteenth person to ask me that. You'll have to be added to the list to wait for an answer."
I kept myself up all night about what faction I should choose. I finally decided, and my fingernails are chewed off.
"Erudite," Corban says. That's the faction he is choosing, and I'm not. I get an empty feeling in my stomach.
"That's the faction," we say together. He laughs, and I force a giggle out to hide my sad mood. We reach the entrance to the Choosing Ceremony building and we all hop off the truck. The doors open just as we arrive, and everyone pours in and finds their faction seats. The doors close once everyone is settled and the factionless look in from the windows. Our leader, Hensha Climb of Abnegation, is in front of the room.
"Welcome to The Choosing Ceremony," she says. Everyone claps.
"Here, teenagers will choose the rest of their life, to symbolize freedom of choice and free will, which is one of the greatest things we have in this world we are left in. Faction before Blood," Hensha finishes.
"Faction before Blood!" Says the crowd. Dauntless causes a huge commotion.
"To reassure you, I will go over the Factions," she says. She walks to a bowl.
"Amity. The Peaceful." A bowl of dirt.
"Candor. The Truthful." Glass.
"Dauntless. The Brave." Hot coals. Dauntless people scream and shout.
"Abnegation. The Selfless." Stones.
"Erudite. The Intelligent." Water. In each bowl, the faction symbol is carved into each of them to symbolize each faction. A man walks in after Hensha sits down.
"Abnegation," he says. The order will be the same as always. Abnegation, Candor, Amity, Dauntless, Erudite. Teenager after teenager, people choose factions. Some stay in the factions, causing their parents to hug them. But others switch factions, causing parents to shriek in horror and cry. Some people take a long time, looking at the bowls and finally choosing, but some people quickly choose. I wonder if anyone else here is Divergent.
"Next Faction. Amity," says the man. He calls familiar names, and most people decide to stay.
"Hadley Wattson." My heart pounds. My sister stand up and hugs my parents, as we have to do as the peaceful. She confidently walks down the steps and into the center of the room. She cuts her wrist with the knife given to her and holds her hand out over a bowl blinding her choice from the crowd.
"Amity." Amity people clap, and my parents sigh of relief. She walks back up to us and sits down.
"Celest Wattson." I quickly stand. My parents do as well, and open for a hug which I quickly accept then walk by, acting quite rude. I slowly walk down the steps, and I feel that everyone is staring at me. And of course, they all are. I reach the front of the room and my eyes scan the bowls. I grab the knife and cut my wrist. It is a sharp and quick pain, like a bee sting or a shot. I hold my blood to make sure it doesn't drip. I look over the bowls millions of times before I hear whispers amongst the crowd. My heart pounds in my ears, and quickly, my blood drops. A sizzle breaks the silence of the room. The man looks to see what faction I have chosen. My parents won't have two children at home, but at least they will have one.
"Dauntless."
