"Is she going to be alright?"

"She isn't waking up. I've called Erudite multiple times to see if they have medicine, and I''ve given her everything. Nothing is working. She is out."

"She can't be dead, can she?"

"I don't think she is."

"Sean, if she's awake, is this a factionless girl we're looking at?"

"I don't think so. Bess?"

"If she misses all of initiation, then she is factionless."

"What about the kid who pushed her?"

"I'm going to ruffle him up. He isn't factionless though. Don't go easy on him."

"We won't."

A door closes. Multiple voices swirl around my head and I try to join in and say something, but lips remain closed and my eyes won't open.

"Bess, before you go.." I hear Bess's footsteps on the stone floor walk back over to my bed.

"She's in a coma."

Coma? I haven't heard that word in a long time, nor did I ever understand it. My teachers told me people can hear what others are saying in a coma, they just can't comprehend it. Like a mindless, sleeping slave. Then I realize that the nurse is right. I am in a coma.

"Isn't that obvious?" Bess replies.

"Anyways, I don't think she is going to make it. I mean, she might, but if she does she is going to be in this coma for a long time and I can't keep her here."

"What does that mean?"

"She has to die soon. We have to kill her."

I hear nothing but silence, so quiet I could hear a pen drop.

"Give her another day." Before the nurse says anything, a door closes again signalizing Bess left.

I know now what is happening to me.

I am in a coma.

I am not supposed to wake up.

If I do, I am factionless.

If I don't, I am dead.
