Chapter one: The calm before bloodshed

My Name is Vasily Zhakhalov, a Russian soldier, i wanted to join the war because i want to serve my country, the Soviet Union, I was sent immediately when the Axis invaders went to attack our union, I should of know that they would attack us, they have no honer, they are territory hungry, wanting everything for themselves.

I was waiting at the station with other comrade soldiers and officers, some soldiers and civlians taking aid, i saw a poor young boy with field dressing around his head and upper chest, I prayed to my God that his fate will not end in death at this young age. Suddenly I saw our train pass by, it was huge! The train had AA gun defences, in case if the damn sutka plane desides to "drop in" on us. It stopped and the officers unlocked the cart doors and yelled "Every civilian must get out immediately! This train is going where our might Red  Army soldiers will fight!" they repeated over and over again, until they signaled for us brave men to go in.

The officers closed and locked the door carts and said a "go", the rain moved on forward to the battle field. The rrom was dark, only to be lighted up with the outside light, I asked  a soldier next to me, "Hey, comrade, I have no idea where are we going. Where are we going to fight?"

The soldier replied "We are going to fight in Stalingrad, our glorious leaders' city."

Stalingrad? Oh what delight! I am going to fight for my leader's city, i might have a great honer, after all it is the city of Stalin! Even though it was not important like our capitol, Moscow, but it is still important.

When the train stopped, more officers unlocked and opened the carts, when i looked at the city ahead, it was covered in smoke and fire, i saw wounded men, boats and men everywhere, i was shocked and backed away from jumping onto teh ground, the officers yelled "C'mon get out!" they eventually pulled us all out. The first thing i want to do is to get onto a boat or find a gun, i heard the officers yelling all over the place saying "Great comrade Stalin has ordered 'Not one cowardly step backward!'", "Soldiers of the soviet union!", 'Get on the damn boat comrade!" and many more, it was all mixed of the voices. I walked down a short slope leading onto the boat, I saw officers shooting their pistols in the air, trying to make the soldiers listen to them.

I finally reached a boat and went on it, i saw the soldier that told me where i was going to, I looked back at the officer that was holding his hand up to make a speech, "Comrades! Today you will fight the Axis invaders with all your power in you! For each and every one of your fallen comrades you see, you will make them pay, with 10 of theirs!"

Another officer spoke, "Listen to me! To thy Russian mothers, to their sons at the front! They are fighting with every all they can do! You will all do the same! And now, it is the honer and duty of giving you life-" He was silenced of bombs hitting other boats on the way, the wooden, boats had not a chance, bursting into flames and silencing all of the people in it, Thank God i was not one of them. The officer continued, "Avenge your motherland by killing every axis invader you see Avenge your self an the motherla-" a voice interupted in the distance, wailing out, "Sutka! watch out!"

5 Sutka planes wailed its siren and went towards us, the terrorfying siren was the sound you will hear before you died, i ducked down and prayed that my life won't end from this, the planes dropped bombs and shot at us, i was not hit but i felt a comrade next to me got hit and his blood splattered on my face, my eyes widened in shock and i heard many other voices scream and died down, i saw an officer that said his spech first got shot and fell of the boat, teh bombs did not hit us but hit ither boats, killing everything on it. I turned around to see if my comrade that told me where are we going to is still alive but he was nowhere to be seen, he was dead, suddenly another voice screamed, "They're comming back!!" the wailing of the sutka's returned and i ducked down, looking at the floor, i heard a desperste officer fire his sub-machine gun at the planes but found no luck, instead being a target and being shot down, falling into the remaining soldiers, only a few dying screams was heard, i looked up and gave a sigh of relef that the attack was over but i saw 3 soldiers snapped and went to jump off a boat, another comrade next to me grabbed another and said, "Comrade! help me! we need this one alive, one more soldier helps!"

I grabbed one soldier and he resisted to jump off the boat, i thought that saving a life ment, a win for the war, but one officer withdrew his pistol and pointed at the 2 soldiers trying to flee, "Get back or i shoot! Get back to the rim!" but it was two late, the 2 so called 'deserters' now jumped off the boat, an officer screamed "TRAITOR!" and shot his pistol into the fleeing soldiers, the screams were short and died off, but sadly they were not the only ones who decided to flee, other bodies were floating, not having any deatached limbs comfirms that is was a deserters that got shot, i was glad i was not one of them.

Another officer said his last words to us surviving soldiers, "Whatever you do, you will not fall back, or else will end up like the traitor in the boat!"

When we arrived to the docks, we immeadiatly came off, i looked at the boat, now covered in blood and dead bodies, the wounded got a streatcher and went off the boat as well, i saw my comrade who told me where are we going, he was shot in the neck, belly and back, blood continued to blossem out of his body, I looked away and walked to a place where they seem giving Rifles and amunition, i walked alowly and joined the line, hoping that I will get a rifle.
