Darkness fell as the last traces of light slowly disappeared. Stars twinkled merrily, unaware of any danger. The moon illuminated the path ahead, a silhouette against the dark clear sky. In the centre of the countryside, amidst the tall looming trees, owls hooted now and then, their screeches echoing in the silent surroundings. A faint outline of a figure ran across the land.
Victoria's P.O.V.
I had to get away- fast. That was my only thought, my only worry. As I ran with all my might, my heartbeat getting louder, pulsating like an instrument in my ears, I realised there was only one way.
I have to keep going.
But it wouldn't be easy, I had to accept that much. What obstacles would there be on the way, hidden and ready to pounce on the next trespasser? Would I be able to survive one more injury; one more trip or fall?
My left leg was already weak, my jeans ripped, my shirt blood-stained and torn. But then it came.
The lake.
Dark and uninviting.
It was the only way. But how would I cross it without even knowing how to swim, let alone stay afloat for barely a few seconds? How deep would it be and would I actually survive? There was no turning back now.
I have to keep going.
I wasn't going to give up, not now after having escaped them yet again for what- the third time?
I would show them. Show them that I wasn't just a poor sixteen year old orphan. I was going to be strong, I had to be!
I have to keep going.
But then as I turned my pale face to scan the country landscape behind me, I saw what made my heart stop and my insides flicker with helplessness and despair. The glimmer of hope left inside me had turned into nothing.
Because they were there, right behind me, their revolvers ready cradled against their chests. A few more steps, and I would be theirs.
I had to act quickly. I threw off my over-sized jacket which had previously belonged to my mother, I flicked off my shoes and flung myself into the gloomy, murky water.
My insides screamed as all the blood drained from my weak body. As I struggled desperately, my arms and legs flailing, I knew there was not even the slightest fraction of hope.
As I sunk to the bottom unconsciously, the water, a giant sea monster, closed in around me, before I closed my eyes and was welcomed into darkness.

The picture of that night is clear in my head.
Screaming.
Echoes.
Darkness.
Screaming.
Echoes.
Nothing.
Again and again. That's all I hear, all I see.
More screaming.
High pitched, escaping the mouth of a terrified woman. Then more screams yet again. This time deeper, stronger, steadier, and clearer.
The door creaks open slowly, the window is wide open, the strong gust of wind giving the bedroom an eerie feel to it. The moon is clearly visible from the window.
It must be midnight.
The witching hour, where all evil occurs.
Then I see it. I see them.
One man, one woman, the moon reflecting of their ghost-like faces.
They lie motionless, deadly still in a pool of blood...

Dear Reader,
Hope you like the suspense at the end, and sorry it was a bit short!! Please vote if you like this and want to read more :))
By the way, just to make it clear, when i said, 'the water, a giant sea monster' i used a metaphor to describe the water and i'm not refering to an actual sea monster, just so u don't get confused, as some people have made this mistake in the past ;)
