Victoria's P.O.V5 years ago
"Goodnight mother," I said, planting a kiss on her powdered cheek. She smelt of roses and the new fragrance father has bought her.
That morning, I had sneaked in to her bedroom to try some on, though unfortunately I got caught. Mother said it was too expensive for a child to be 'playing' with it. Just my luck!
"Goodnight sweetheart," mother replied, stroking my long, messy hair.
I looked up at her beautiful, pleasant face, wishing I could be more like her, even though all my friends at school said I was already really pretty.
Mother's eyes looked soft and gentle. They were wide and a bright shade of green, beautifully outlined in a sort of metallic grey. I really wanted my eyes to be like hers, mine had to be a dull, light green didn't they?
I went up to my bedroom, shutting the door softly behind me, and I clambered into bed. Suddenly there was a knock at the door.
"Come in!" I called, expecting to see father coming to say goodnight.
But it was Sam. My brother.
As he walked in silently, he smiled and his whole face lit up. He was very tall and handsome, like the Prince's in fairy tales I used to love reading when I was younger.
Sam plunked himself at the end of my bed.
"Vicky," he said."You know, I really do think I've been adopted."
"Oh Sam, not again!" I cried. He was always saying that.
"But Vicky, you know mother and father hardly notice I'm here half the time. I just don't think they're my real parents. Look at the way they fuss over you!"
"Don't be silly! I know I'm amazing and all," I joked, punching him playfully on the arm."But come on Sam, the youngest always gets spoiled. I'm only 11 and you're 18, practically an adult! Or do you want to be babied by them, or what?"
Sam sighed."I don't even look like mother or father at all, probably because they're not my birth parents."
"You know that's not true! You have father's hair, and so do I, and practically everyone says you have exactly the same eyes as mother."
It was true. I looked in to Sam's eyes now. They really were like mother's. The same stunning green with the grey outline. I could see sadness in his eyes too. Sam's eyes always showed his emotions and reflected his feelings. But what was this?
I could also see a flash of anger in them, as well as sadness.
Though he was my brother, Sam was very hard to analyse. Why would he be angry? Surely he didn't think that mother and father were really neglecting him?
"Listen to me Victoria," Sam suddenly said."When you wake up tomorrow, you wont find me here, OK? Just don't worry about me."
"But Sam, what do you mean?" I cried in astonishment."Where are you going?"
"I don't know myself yet, all I know is I'm probably not going to see you for a very long time, perhaps not at all."
He kissed my forehead, and with that, he left the room, leaving me completely perplexed.
The next day...
I woke up early, due to the dazzling sunlight visible through my thin, white curtains. Then I remembered what Sam had told me last night. I jumped out of bed, and rushed to his bedroom on the other side of the landing.
It was empty. He had meant it.
And I was too late. His backpack had gone, along with a few other of his belongings.
I couldn't believe it. Why was he doing this? I loved him so much- he was my brother! What were mother and father going to say?
I couldn't understand Sam. I just wanted to know what was going through his mind right now.
I suddenly spotted a small piece of paper lying on his bed side table. I picked it up. It was a note left by Sam. My hand's shook as I read:
Victoria,
I've gone, and I'm never coming back.
Just thought you'd like to know the reason I left, seeing as we may not see each other again.
I read mother and father's will, you know.
And fortunately for you, when they die, they're fortune of a few million-
But I couldn't read any more, due to the tears that had welled up in my eyes, blurring my vision.
I stuffed the note in to my pocket and silently walked out of Sam's bedroom.
I went up to mother and father's room door and knocked shakily, trying to plan out in my head what I was going to say to them.
When nobody answered, I opened the door, not knowing what horror was awaiting me inside.
