"Sam?" I said in a low voice, my mouth hung open in bewilderment.

"Yeah, that's me," he replied with a grin.

"I mean Sam, my Sam." My voice was barely a whisper. I paused, and after taking a deep breath, I asked:

"Are you, my brother Sam?"

I waited for an answer when suddenly a thought popped in to my head. What if I was mistaken? I soon knew when Sam just grinned-again.

"Could be, you never know," he said with a shrug while letting out a small chuckle.

I stared at him in silence for a moment.

"You are, I know you are."

"Really? How?" He gave me a questioning look, studying my face with his serious eyes. Those eyes, just like my mother's, that I used to admire so much.

Ignoring his questions, I asked, "Why did you leave?"

His face turned pale, but he said nothing.

"Sam, why did you leave?" I repeated, my voice rising.

He averted his gaze from mine, still not saying a word. I knew that he knew exactly what I was asking, but he was trying to hide it, though he failed to do so.

For a while all was quiet and still in the room, the sound of the clock ticking being the only thing we could hear apart from our own heart beats and my heavy breathing.

"How did you know where to find me- when I jumped in to the lake I mean?" I questioned breaking the silence.

"I didn't know where to find you. It was a coincidence, though pretty fortunate for you. I walked past the lake just as I saw a figure jumping in to it. I just thought someone wanted to swim though wondered who would want to at that time of night!

"Anyway, when I turned round about half a minute later, no one had resurfaced and I could see no movement in the water. So waiting until about 2 minutes had past, I jumped in to the lake, found a body lying at the bottom unconsciously and brought it out of the water. It wasn't until I had brought the body home that I found it was you."

Sam suddenly smiled unexpectedly, filling me with a warm, tingling sensation. And that's when I knew for sure that he was in fact my Sam.

My brother, whose smile brightened up any mood. The smile I knew so well, and longed to see everyday after he left that night.

Then Sam got up, gesturing for me to accompany him, and follow him out of the room.

I ran a hand through my tangled, waist- length hair, got up as instructed, and followed Sam out of the room and up the stairs.

He stopped in the landing, and turned to me.

"Seeing as you'll be staying here now, I thought I'd give you a bedroom that will suit all your needs and that you'll be comfortable in."

"I'm staying here ?" I asked in surprise.
