Prologue:

Not much is known about the origins of mermaids. Some stories say that they were once winged creatures, with a grace and beauty that didn't belong to the realm of Earth, who spent to much time on rocks by the sea and traded their wings for a tail fin, so they could explore the ocean and its wonders. Other stories claim that it was Poseidon who created them, in the same if not similar way, he created horses from sea foam. Finally it is said that mermaids were once human, who's heart had been broken and they threw themselves at sea as a means to end their pain and sadness.

All these stories have one thing in common, that all mermaids are females.

Why is this you may ask? Because nine times out of ten the ones that see this creatures are men, sailors to be precise, and so they twist what they see and witness to better fit their own selfish desires for attention. Little do humans know, is that mermaids and merman can walk on land among them and they don't even realize, but only for a certain period of time, for they must return to the ocean or a body of water should they not wish to become ill. Only their kind can recognize each other when they walk on land, either by scent or by looking into their eyes, for they can see the ocean reflected on them.

Yet there is one final legend, very rare that no human knows about it and very few mere-folk remember. Sometimes a mermaid or merman is born with both the magic of the ocean and the magic of a human witch or wizard, these births are so rare that they are guarded like the world's most sacred treasure. They can also be dangerous, for if said child is lead down the wrong path, they could cause unimaginable destruction.

Thus our story begins when this birth happens, after almost 250 years since the last one was born. Her name:

Hermione Granger

Born after a late night summer storm under a full moon, brown wavy bed of hair adorned her head as she let out a cry, letting the pod know a new member had joined the family, but when she opened her eyes, brown with  little golden rings on the outside, her parents knew what she was.

Special.
