CHAPTER ONE: HALF TOASTED TOAST
(Rachel POV)
Three years ago all hell broke loose. Every city, town, village across the world went dark. To make it worse I was in the middle of toasting some bread and I couldn't finish. So I had to eat only half toasted toast! Let's just say it was pretty bad. My brother Christopher and I were getting ready for school when it started. All the lights in the house turned off and nothing worked. At first I thought it was just a power outage, but soon found out it was much much worse.
Both of my parents had gone on to work leaving me to drive my brother to school. I am fifteen by the way and my parents got me a brand new, four door, hard top Jeep. I've wanted one since my twelfth birthday and when I got it I practically exploded with joy. Now back to my story.
I tried to call my mom telling her we had a power outage, but my cell phone didn't work it would't even turn on. I panicked like usual because I knew the battery wasn't dead. So I went to my neighbors house where my best friend Zoe Carson lived. They had the same problem, too. I kept on panicking, but Zoe calmed me down.
"It's okay breath Rachel just breath. Why don't you go get ready and wait for me by your car. We will ride together to school." She told me and I followed her instructions. When I got back to my house I found Christopher, my eleven year old brother, sitting on the sofa nibbling on a cold pop tart.
"Are you ready?" I asked him picking up my red backpack. I usually get up early to take a shower and get ready; Thank goodness I did so this morning. All I needed was to eat breakfast and grab my bag. He nodded standing up. I took an apple from the fruit basket and bit I to it as we walked out the door. "Zoe is riding with us today so sit in the back."
I got in the drivers seat and stuck the keys in the ignition. The car didn't start. I tried again. No luck. Just breath. I told myself, but I did the complete opposite. Thank goodness Zoe came outside.
"Rachel! What now?" She got in the car staring at me.
"The... Car...won't...start!" Yeah so I panicked a lot except it didn't mattered the moment.
"Okay hold on like nothing is working!" Zoe said. Great job at stating the obvious. "My mom is inside let me check and see if she can help." Zoe jumped out of the car then a minute later Mrs. Carson came out with her daughter.
"Rachel, honey calm down everything is fine. I will take you to school." Mrs. Carson told me. "Come on let's go."
"But you don't understand Mrs. C nothing works. The powers off, my phone won't turn on, and now the car doesn't start!" I whined. Christopher just sat in the back of my car quietly. He usually is very talkative.
"Mom my phone doesn't work either and our power is out as well. What do you want to bet our car doesn't start either?" Zoe said gesturing to there sliver vehicle.
Mrs. Carson went to her car and tried to turn it on. Nothing happened. Today was turning out to be a wonderful day. A few of our neighbors had started to come outside saying that nothing thing worked. It seemed the whole street had the same problem as us. I was confused which made my head hurt.
"Girls go wake up Zach I think you should stay here today if no one can get there car to start then no one can take you to school. Chris can you go ask a few of our neighbors what's going on?" He nodded then ran off from house to house. Me and Zoe went in her house ready to wake Zoe's twin brother Zach. I calmed down knowing we would be fine as long as we stayed with the Carson's. When we got to his room I barley opened the door then looked in to see where he was. Laying on the bed was a boy with mocha skin and dark brown hair. He looked just like Zoe, but that was expected from identical twins. Zach snored loudly as we tip toed into his room. On the count of three we jumped on the bed screaming. The look on his face was hilarious as he fell off the bed screaming.
"You little..." I couldn't hear the rest of what he said I was laughing so hard. My stomach ached and tears flowed from my eyes. If only I had thought to video tape this!
"Morning sunshine! There is no power, our phones don't work, and the cars won't start. Now get up!" Zoe said while laughing.
"What?" He sat there confused looking up at us from the floor.
"Nothing works. Got it?" His sister flopped down beside me on the bed.
Zach mumbled then walked over to the bathroom. I watched him turn on the sink faucet, but no water came out. He tried again still nothing. "You have got to be kidding!" Me and Zoe ran downstairs trying every water facet in the house even the garden hose outside. None of them worked. Mrs. Carson came inside with Christopher at her heels. They both were panting and quickly shut the door then locked it.
"Block the windows and close the curtains! Now! Everyone meet upstairs as soon as your done! Hurry we don't have much time!" Chris shut the big window in the living room while I ran upstairs going from room to room closing the windows. What's going on? Soon everyone was huddled in Zach's bedroom.
"What's going on?" I asked Mrs. Carson.
"Me and Chris decided to walk down the street to see if everyone had this problem. Turns out they did. Some people got angry and have started ganging up on people saying nothing will turn back on ever. They were breaking in to some house stealing food. The moment I saw this I got Chris and ran. Could you get me a glass of water?"
"I would if we had any. The water doesn't work either." Zach said.
"Oh, I hate to say it, but if stuff doesn't start working soon...we might not make it. No water means we will have to use bottled water when that runs out were on our own." I felt like crying. What was going on?! Did the government shut everything down? Was it something that would last a day or would it never work again? Questions flowed through my mind until Chris talked.
"What about mommy and daddy?" Oh no! They were out there going to work. There fine don't worry about it. They will be home soon. I whispered to myself. I hoped they would be, but something told me otherwise.
