Chapter Four

The night was painfully slow and dreadfully unproductive.  Usually, I'm the one to finish my homework as soon as I get back from rehearsal, practice, meetings, whatever it may be.  Tonight was not one of those nights.

I kept my phone on my night table as I laid in my bed on my school laptop trying to finish my research paper.  Every minute, my hand seemed to drift towards my phone to see if there were any notifications to no avail.  As someone who usually didn't check their phone while doing homework, I couldn't not check it.

I finally got fed up, knowing that my research paper was going no where and that my mind was begging me for a mental break from staring at the words on the screen.  I decided to do some online browsing for homecoming dresses even though I figured no boy would ever dream of asking me.  I found a couple of cute dresses that I knew I could probably never pull off but were fun to look out.  Then, my phone dinged.

The notification that I had longed for the entire day popped up on my screen; it was a message from Tom.

Hey, when did you say homecoming was again? The producers really want me to go for the true high school experience.

October 21st!  It's in two weeks :)

Thanks!  See you tomorrow.

Cya!  Have fun at rehearsal.

A painfully short conversation but a conversation nonetheless.  In the back of my mind I dreamed that he'd be the one putting the corsage on my wrist for homecoming but in reality I knew it wouldn't be.  He'd find someone who would look good by his side, not me.

Knowing that another text message from him wasn't likely, I put away my phone and actually got to work.

I was wrong to do so.

I heard my phone vibrate in the drawer I kept it in and pulled it back out.  By now, it was nearing 9 pm, so I was shocked I had any notifications at all.

Hey, just got out of rehearsal.  Wanna call and talk about homework or something?  My directors asked me to truly learn everything I can about high school and considering I don't have to do my own homework, I wanted to learn about the after school struggles too.

Uh, sure!  I'm working on math right now.  You can call when you're ready I guess.

Nervously, I checked my hair and non-makeup face in my phone camera trying to look as decent as I could while doing homework.  Unsuccessfully, I attempted to make my hair look a little less flat and finally gave up when I realized he was calling.  I looked like absolute trash.

"Hi Amy!  How's the homework going?" he asked.

"It's going" I said chuckling.  "I absolutely hate calculus".  I turned the screen around to show him the long strings of somewhat unorganized work I had on my paper.  His eyes widened.

"I don't remember having to do that in school.  And I only graduated last year, it wasn't too long ago" he said.

"This school is pretty prestigious.  Lots of hard classes.  It's quite the workload".

"I didn't realize this school was for mini Einsteins".

"Yup, pretty much.  Although I'm probably more like Einstein's bestie who supported him throughout his work.  Not a genius whatsoever" I laughed.

"I don't know, you're definitely smarter than I am".  I shook my head and mumbled a swear word under my breath when checking my work didn't support my answer as I had hoped it would.  "Hey, how about we talk about something other than calc for a second" he mentioned, clearly realizing that I was frustrated.

"You did call me to learn about homework... but how was rehearsal?" I asked, genuinely curious.  He went on telling me about his co-stars and him attempting to memorize his lines but clearly struggling because he was thinking about the newly added stress of high school on his shoulders as well as more things that began to get off topic.  "Tom, I really have to get to finishing this homework.  It's nearly 11 pm" I interjected, though it didn't mean that I wanted to end the call in the slightest.

"Well, alright Ames.  Thanks for teaching me about the stresses of high school again" he said laughing.  "Have a good night.  Sweet dreams.  Cya tomorrow" he said yawning, causing me to as well.

"Goodnight.  See you in the morning.  Sleep well" I said before hanging up the call.

Thinking about what had just happened prevented me from finishing my homework but I knew it wouldn't be checked anyways.  My sleepy eyes carried me into a slumber and I had dreams of dancing with Tom at homecoming.  Sweet dreams indeed.
