"Maybe its for the best," he says. His hands are over mine, both of us looking down at the scuffed floors of the airport.
"Yeah," I whisper, barely audible. A tear falls and before I could catch it, he does. He tilts my chin gently so our eyes could meet.
"Don't cry." his voice falters. "I'll always love you, we can be together someday, again." He tries to sound hopeful. I smile at the thought, but the overwhelming emotion of loss is too great to think about the future.
"Nothing lasts forever Luke, nothing stays the same," I hold back a sob. The gate calls for the last passengers for their flight.
"I will always love you Joi, don't ever, ever forget that" He kisses me on the forehead then my lips. It was a simple kiss, yet filled with all these emotions that blur together. "Please, I want - need to hear you say it. " Our eyes meet again, his eyes glisten with the tears that are about to fall.
"I-I love you, Luke. So damn much." I can't take it anymore, I wrap my arms around his neck and just hug him as tight and as long as I could. He hugs me back with greater strength, both of us are tense trying to hold everything inside.
"This won't be goodbye. I won't let it be." he says with a hint of determination. We both finally let go, but our hands are still intact. It feels like seconds, but the gate calls again, this time specifically for Luke.
"See you soon?" He says with a halfhearted smile. We look into each others eyes once again, and I return the halfhearted smile.
"See you soon."
He lets go of my hand and walks hastily to the gate, I go to the window and watch the plane door finally close.
"Goodbye Luke."
