I awoke to light pouring into my room. The golden rays giving each object a new energy. My arms threw the duvet off of me and I sat up.

Groaning- I began to shift off of the bed and like an explosion, my entire dream had come back to me. The cake. Her stupid laugh. Ridiculous joke. Birthday.

Honestly, I hated birthdays. Why celebrate being alive for so many years? It isn't a competition nor something to be proud of. Who actually wants to stay alive in this ruined world anyway?

I heard footsteps making their way to my shared room so I laid back down and pretended to sleep. Maybe I could escape breakfast I thought, knowing that'd never be allowed.

"Hey Eli, Wakey wakey" Luke whispered into my ear. I squinted my eyes open and lifted my arms up for a hug. His arms engulfed me and I rested my head on his shoulder. Luke nudged me, "Breakfast time".

I replied with a groan and shifted my way out of his arms and so also out of my bed.

We sat down and 'ate' in our own ways. For example: I stared at the food in the centre of the table, not even bothering to move any of it onto my plate, whereas Luke ate almost everything on his plate.

Lobo came in and told us we could leave and with that a sigh of relief left my lips. I wandered into the back garden as Luke followed me.

"Hey, guess what?" He said in his irritably happy way.

I rolled my eyes and mumbled a 'what?'

"I'm almost free from this place!" He smiled, "Only a few days then I can do whatever I want" He said far too cheerfully.

I sank into myself, my one true happiness would be leaving me.

"Oh," I paused, "That's great Luke, really great."

"Eli.." He stared right at me "I'm not leaving you, you're going to get better too. I promise. I'll be here for you"

I looked around the garden. Anywhere but at him. He surely couldn't just leave me like this. But he couldn't waste his whole life waiting for me either. He had to go, live his dream. Not wait around waiting for me to get over all of this bullshit.

"No Luke. You go, you go and do what you need to do to live your dream. Please don't waste your life waiting for me. I've already fucked up my life I don't want to, I can't fuck up yours too."

I stood up slowly, left him sitting on the ground and walked back towards the house. He shouted out to me.
