“Kali! Look! A puppy!” Sure enough, I turned around to see a puppy running up behind me. It looked about 2 months old, and probably an Australian shepherd. It was tricolored, and it was adorable. The puppy ran up to me. “Hi buddy!” I held out my hand, and the puppy sniffed it and then sat down to be petted. The dog had an orange collar, but no tag. I started petting the dog, looking around for an owner.

“Oh thank you!” A girl around my age came running up to me with a leash in her hand. She clipped the leash back on to the dog, who sat with it’s tongue out while I petted her.  “You’re welcome.” I smiled, “Is it yours?” I asked, gesturing to the puppy.

“Kind of, she’s a rescue, and I was supposed to just walk her but somehow the leash came undone! She’s up for adoption though, all her litter mates were adopted and she’s the last one.” The girl sighed.

“Hi puppy! Kali she so pretty! Can we keep her?!” Amber flung her arms around the puppy, who started licking her face.  “You’re such a silly puppy!” Amber giggled.

“She is up for adoption…” The girl smiled. “I don’t know Amber, we’d have to ask your mom.”  Amber’s face fell.

“How about this, I’ll give you the card with the shelter’s info, and try and keep her on hold for the next 24 hours. After that, I’ll assume it was a no, sound good?” The girl suggested hopefully. “Sure, that sounds great! I’ll try and reason with her mom.” I said with a wink, taking the information card from her. “I’m Ellie by the way.” She said, shaking my hand. “I’m Kalila, and this is Amber.” I said, pointing to the girl still petting the dog. “Oh and her mom’s name is Carly.” Ellie smiled, “Ok! Thanks again! Bye Amber!” Amber waved goodbye to the dog, who followed Ellie as she continued their walk away from the park.

“I liked that doggie Kali!” Amber said with a sad smile as we started to walk back to her house. “Me too, we’ll ask your mommy though, ok?”

Back at the house, we had mac n cheese for lunch before Carly got back.

“Amber! Kali!” Carly said as she pushed open the door to the apartment.

“Mommy!!” Amber jumped up from her bowl of mac n cheese.

She hugged her mom, and then proceeded to tell her all about the dog we met.

I watched the confused Carly and mouthed “tell you later” and she winked and then continued nodding along to the four year olds story.

“Let me talk to Kali ok? Can you go play in your room for a minute?” Carly asked. “Ok! I want to play with my giraffe.” Amber happily walked off to play with her (stuffed) giraffe.

“Geez. How was she?” Carly asked, sitting down at the table.

“Great! She was an angel.” I smiled.

“What about a puppy?” She asked confused.

“Oh we met this adorable shelter puppy out for a walk at the park today. Amber absolutely fell in love with her, and the girl gave me the shelters information in case you want to go look in at her. I know it’s a long shot, but Amber absolutely loved her and I think you would too.”  I handed her the shelters card.

“Oh I’ve wanted to get a dog for a while… “ Carly sighed, reading the card.  “I just don’t know if now’s a good time.” “Yeah… well she said they would hold the dog for 24 hours, and I suggest you at least call and get a little more info!” I suggested, starting to pack up my stuff.

“Yeah, I’ll think about it.  Thank you again, how much do I owe you?” She asked, reaching for her purse. “Nothing, it’s fine. I enjoyed it.” I smiled.

After I hugged them both, I started heading back to U.P. I can’t have a dog in our dorm room, but they really should get her! I had a border collie named Autumn all through middle school and high school,  and she had to be put down a couple months before I left. She was an angel, and I think a dog would be a perfect fit to Carly and Amber’s life.

*~*~*

I opened the door to the room to see Marissa wasn’t there again. On my bed was a slip of paper that said “At Starbucks – working! ;) Shift ends at 3!  ~M” I smiled, we both never did anything without our phones but still left paper notes for each other so we knew where we were. Since it was almost 2, I decided to hang out in the room for a little while until Marissa got back.

It was 3:30 when Marissa finally got back.

“You smell like Starbucks!” I exclaimed, looking up from my computer. “Hi to you too!” Marissa laughed. “So I was thinking, I still need some school stuff before Monday when classes start and I was wondering if you wanted to go into the main part of town and find a Wal-Mart or something and get stuff?” Marissa asked.

“Sure! Lemme grab my stuff!” While I grabbed my purse, wallet, phone, and made a list of stuff to get, Marissa googled the nearest Wal-Mart.

Once we got to Wal-Mart, we wandered around until we found the school section.

“Kali look!” I turned away from the binders I was looking at to see Marissa with a handful of hello kitty notebooks. “I can be a 4th grader again!” She grinned.

“Oh my gosh Marissa put those back!” I laughed. “Hey look!” I grabbed a set of One Direction notebooks from a shelf. “It get’s better!” Marissa cackled evilly, before grabbing One Direction pencils, pencil case, binder, and calendar off of another shelf.

By the time we checked out, we had 2 packs of normal pencils  (and one pack of One Direction pencils, thanks to Marissa), at least 2 notebooks and a binder each (one of those notebooks is Hello Kitty—also thanks to Marissa) and a handful of calculators, composition notebooks, a few pairs of sweatpants, and 4 different types of chocolate. Most of the notes and stuff we would be taking and a lot of the school stuff would be on a computer or provided, but its good to be prepared.

“That ones yours.” I said to Marissa as the checkout guy rang up the hello kitty notebook.

I took a picture of our Marissa and the chocolate, sweat pants, and hello kitty/one direction stuff, and posted it to instagram with the caption “ trying to shop for school stuff… “  While I was posting it to Instagram, I realized there was a video I didn’t recognize in my camera roll. When I opened it up, I realized it was a video of me and Matthew dancing to Counting Stars in Rosie’s the other night. I smiled, Jesy must have taken it and I hadn’t noticed. That’s a cute memory I will keep forever.

Marissa and I grabbed our bags and headed back to U.P. We have one more day before school starts!
