I was watching Divergent on my computer when my phone buzzed. It was Sunday morning, and since I’d only been here a week I didn’t have a church I went too, so Marissa and I were spending the morning lazily watching movies before school starts tomorrow.

Hey :)
The amazing Spiderman? Who was that? “Marissa! Did you change my contact names?” She looked over at my phone, shaking her head.

Who is this?

Someone special! I’ll give you a hint- I was texting to see if you wanted to meet at the gym in an hour?
Matthew! Marissa started laughing, “really, the amazing Spiderman?” I shook my head, “I don’t even know.” I mumbled back, typing an answer.

See you there, Spiderman.
I managed to pull myself out of bed, take a shower, do my makeup, put my hair in a messy bun, and get a tank top, hoodie, and leggings on in 45 minutes.
“Do I look ok?” I asked Marissa. I didn’t know what to wear, I was going to the gym but…. “Why do you care?” Marissa smirked. “Shut up!” I laughed, pulling my sneakers on. “Yes, you look great. Now go! Matthew’s waiting!” Marissa smiled, pushing me out the door.
When I got to the gym, I pushed open the door, and signed in with the gym so they knew I was registered and whatever.
“Kali!” A voice called as I was walking up the stairs. I turned around as Matthew caught up with me.
“Hey.” He smiled. “Hi. The amazing Spiderman? Really?” I asked, laughing.
Matthew shrugged sheepishly. “umm I’m a Spiderman fan?” He said, making it more of a question than an answer. “When did you do that anyway??” I asked.
“While you were busy losing at soccor with Marissa and David at the park.” He winked.
“Losing?! I was not losing!” I defended myself.
“Yes you were!”
“Was not!”
“Were too!”
I laughed, “Ok fine, I was losing. But that’s beside the point!”
Matthew shrugged, “Whatever you say. What should we do?” He asked, gesturing to all the gym equipment.
We spent the next hour doing various things, some running, weight lifting, and I almost died laughing at Matthew attempting to follow the yoga instructions by some mats.
“Like this?” He asked. I looked over at him from my mat, he was sitting with one foot on front of him, the other wrapped awkwardly behind him, and had his hands in the air in a “ta da” motion.
“Wow.. I don’t think you could be more wrong.” I laughed. Following the little pictures of different things, I stood up and took my right foot and put it by my knee.
“No Kali, it’s like this.” Matthew corrected me. He was standing the same way I was, except he had his hands in front of him in a little pyramid.
“Oh yeah?” I asked walking over to him. I took a finger and pushed on his hands.
From that little motion, he started tipping over.
I started laughing, and looked down at him lying on the ground, his mouth open in fake shock.
Eventually, we decided we were done half messing around, half exercising.
“So what now?” Matthew asked, standing outside.
“Wanna go to Rosie’s? It’s almost lunch anyway.” Matthew suggested.
“Yeah, good idea. Walk or ride?” I asked, pointing to the bus stop.
“Let’s walk.” I nodded, and we began walking the 6 blocks to the diner.
“Remember when we were dancing around there the other night?” I asked.
“Yeah, why?” “Cause Jesy filmed the entire thing on my phone.” I handed him my phone. “Really? Wow. You have to send me this.” He laughed, handing me it back.
I nodded, pushing the door open to the diner.
It was kind of busy, at least half of the booths were full, and I could see Jesy at the front desk, and another girl walking in and out of the kitchen.
“Hey guys! What can I get you?” Jesy asked, looking tired.
“It’s busy in here!” I said, looking at the menu. “Yeah it is… it’s only me, Curtis, and Jenny working too. We could use some more help.” Jesy sighed. “hey I still need a job.” I laughed. “That’s not a bad idea! If you’re serious, I could give you an application.” Jesy smiled. Wow. I’d said it slightly serious, but hey this would be great. “Actually that sounds great!” I smiled. “Ok, if you hang around after it’s a little less busy, I’ll come over to your table. Sound good?” She asked. “Matthew is that ok?” I asked, not wanting to ditch him. “Yeah! If you need two workers, I need a job too.” Jesy laughed, “Great! I like you too, so I think it works even better. As long as you’re not like a robbery duo.” She winked. “Now what can I get you?” “I’ll have a steak burger and a chocolate malt. “ Matthew said, “Can I have fries and a vanilla malt?” I asked. “Coming right up!” Jesy smiled. Once we got our food, we sat down at a booth near a window.
Looking around the dinner, two people at a booth caught my eye. “Hey Matthew, you see that booth? The third one on the right?” I asked, pointing it out. “Yeah?”
“Here, follow me really quick.” We walked over to the booth. “Kali!” Amber exclaimed. “Hi Amber! Hey Carly!” I smiled at the two familiar faces.
“This is Matthew.” I said, introducing him to the two. “This is Carly and Amber, I met them at the park, and now I’m kind of Amber’s babysitter.” I laughed.
“Kali guess what!” Amber exclaimed. “You know the doggy we found? Mommy said we could keep her!” She exclaimed excitedly.
“Yup. She’s at the shelter right now finishing some vaccinations, were picking her up in an hour.” Carly smiled. “That’s awesome!” I grinned.
“What kind of dog is she?” Matthew asked. “She’s an aussie.” Carly smiled. “We’re gonna name her Nala!” Amber said. I laughed. “That’s a great name Amber. Well we have to get back to our food, but congratulations on the puppy!”
“Thanks! And it was nice to meet you Matthew.” Carly said.
Matthew and I went back to our table, and sat down across from each other to eat our food. “I was babysitting Amber when we met the dog their getting. She was on a walk with a shelter worker.” I explained. “Ohh ok!” Matthew said, nodding as he ate his burger. “Nala is a great pick for a name too.” Matthew laughed . “The funny thing is that I showed Amber the Lion King for the first time that morning!”
When Matthew and I finished our food and the diner had emptied out some more, Jesy came over to us.
“So, if you can fill out both of these applications, I’ll call you with schedules and such.” Jesy smiled, handing us both an application.
“ok, thanks Jesy!” “Thank you!” Jesy smiled.
When Matthew and I had filled them out and given them back, we headed back to campus. By now it was almost 2.
At dinner that night, Marissa, David, Matthew and I all sat at a table together. It was a really good potato soup!
“I can’t believe school starts tomorrow.” David said.
“I know, me either.” I agreed, and Matthew and Marissa nodded.
My first year of college, lets do this.
