THAT NIGHT

We've left Disney and are now on our way to my dad's house. I told him to invite some of my cousins and college friends to meet Cameron, but I'm honestly not sure if everyone's received the message.

The uber pulls into my subdivision and I am overtaken by a wave of nostalgia. The neighborhood hasn't aged at all. It's still a classic Californian urban pioneer area. It was up-and-coming during high school and college, but now every house seems filled, with middle-class or high status cars parked in either the garage, up on the driveway or right next to the mailbox. There's a mix of older single family homes ranging in style from ranch to modern, garden-style apartment buildings. As far as I can remember, the neighbors have always been an ethnically diverse mix of young singles and couples, recently divorced and single parents, aging retirees who have lived in the neighborhood for years and immigrants. That seems to still be the case. One home has a South Korean flag, another has a wheelchair parked on the porch and so on and so on. I smile at the complex simplicity of it all. I never knew how good this would feel, coming back here with Cameron.

I pat my stomach and grin. "Hey, little one? This is where momma grew up" I whisper. Cameron turns to me and winks. I'm sure he remembers it too. In fact, his eyes are watering up. The uber driver stops in front of the mailbox. "Here ya'll go" she nods politely, and we thank her, getting out of the car, and bringing our luggage with us. "Alright, alright, alright" Cameron walks up the hill to the entrance and rings the doorbell. We barely have to wait, the door is opened right away. It's my dad. I laugh as he looks immediately down at my belly. "Come in, come in" he gestures. I step in and am greeted with a bunch of hugs and kisses. I don't even have to glance back at Cam. I know he's getting the same amount of love.

"How are you darling?" my dad wraps his huge arms around me and I hug him happily. "So good" I answer his question before walking down the hallway to interact with more people. My best friends from college, Brooke and Preston. Brooke was what I used to call my "Twin" because we both have blonde hair and green eyes and one dead parent. Back in college we had bonded immediately, but we aren't as close as we used to be. Preston is a sassy gay blogger, who I met in college my sophomore year through Brooke. He's skinny and short but never lets anyone fuck with him or his friends. He also invites himself into conversations often. They are already conversing with Cameron. Brooke is enthusing about the baby with frantic hands and Preston won't stop grilling him about our sex life. I jump in to save Cam.

"Hey weirdos" I wrap my arm around Preston and grab Brooke's hand. Cameron mouths a small thank you. "You, young lady, did NOT tell me you were pregnant!" Brooke giggles and flicks my arm. I laugh. I guess I hadn't. In fact, I had only told my dad and close family members and for some reason I had wanted to keep it that way. Maybe I felt some guilt because we weren't married. Speaking of that...

"So what? Y'all can fuck and make babies in the baby oven but Cameron can't put a ring on it?" Preston flips his long dyed orange hair and narrows his eyes.

I blush and glance at Cameron, who has completely gone mute. I know Preston doesn't mean to be rude, it's just his direct and out-there personality talking, but the question seems a little invasive. Even though I've know Brooke and Preston for a long time, there are still some boundaries. Some lines that can't be crossed.

"We're trying to figure everything out right now" I shrug simply and Preston groans. "If you say so" he mutters, before glaring at Cam again.

Someone please save me now.

All of a sudden, my favorite cousin, Macey, rushes over.
Just my luck. Or so I thought.

"SOPHIE! These are your friends right?" she points to an HD photo on her Twitter feed and I gasp, turning Macey's phone so that Cameron can see.

"Right, Sophie? Cameron? That's them. Hana and BooBoo"
