I trudge down the stairs, head beating and palms sweating. To my surprise, Kolt was sitting on the couch with two men in white coats.
"Who are these people?" I blurt out. Kolt turned to me and blinked.
"Um. Just doctors. They think you had a concussion," he explained. I shook my head.
"I feel fine now!" I beam. The last thing I have to worry about is whatever the doctors say is wrong with me, which probably isn't a wise decision on my part.
"Um ok?" Kolt cocked his head. He turned to the doctors. "Thanks for coming."
The doctors nodded and walked out the door. Kolt turned to me. "You remember now?" he asks.
I shrug. "I guess. I didn't need the doctors here." I thought it would be best for him not to know. I didn't want more confusion. "I should probably get going," I say as I storm out the door.
I swing my hair out of my face as the strong winds blow on the beach. I look out into the horizon. The sun barely risen over the ocean. I sigh. This was all so beautiful. And if it was really true, how come I couldn't remember?
"Megan!" a voice called. I swing my head around to find my mother waving out the door. "Come in for breakfast!"
I turn and joined my mother in the house as I see my three sisters already sitting down, the two younger ones gathered around the oldest, who was stomping her thumbs on her GameBoy.
"Stormi!" the littlest shouted at the oldest one. "You missed an item!"
The middle sister rolled her eyes and scoffed. "Ally the items don't matter. It's getting through the stupid routes."
"No the items could be useful!" Ally whined.
Before Stormi could reply, the two sisters break out into shouts.
"Whoah whoah whoah!" Mother said, prying them apart. "Ally, Emma, leave your big sister alone. Just let her play."
"Thank you mom!" Stormi sighed, moving to a chair next to me. I peer over at her GameBoy. She was playing Pokémon. I smile. I've always wanted a little sister that loved gaming. After a few seconds of staring at her screen, Stormi shoved the GameBoy in her jean pocket and turned to me, her ocean blue eyes sparkling.
"You know I beat the fourth gym last night," she said exctedly.
"Really? Great!" I reply. I strangly felt happy for her. As I knew her...
"It was so difficult. It took me a few tries but I got it!" she beamed. I smiled wider. It seems as if her happiness spread to me.
But I had one question in my mind. "Why would you want to play Pokémon if you could go out and live it?" I ask.
Stormi blinked at me, confused at my question. Uh oh, I thought. That was probably a mistake. "Umm, because I study at The Academy of Young Champions? You knew that Megan. You convinced me to sign up," she explained.
"Right," I muttered to myself, turning away from her.
Mother set down a steaming plate. I marvled at the sight of warm food. Steaming eggs, a chocolate chip muffin, and a sesame seed bagel topped with fresh tomatoes. I let the welcoming smell of warm food flood my nostrils. I smiled. Why couldn't breakfast in the real world be this perfect? I start stuffing my face with eggs and the muffin. Soon, (and by that I mean two minutes) I finish the meal, slump back in my chair, and let out a moan, plate practically licked clean.
Lady like, huh?
I didn't care. These people were my family... right?
"Megan," I heard a voice. I look up to see it came from the old woman. "You always leave some eggs for Ocean!" she frowned. Ocean hopped over to my plate, stared at it for a moment, and then looked at me longingly. I blinked twice. I did? Ok...
"Oh. Yah. I was just... real hungry!" I forced a sheepish smile. The old woman squinted at me, as if she was trying to look deeper inside. The look somehow hurt me.
I stood up and cleared my plate, using the sink to scrub it off, my head held low. I then drag myself outside, trying not to notice the multiple, disappointing stares from my family.
How could I not remember? What's happening to me? Why can't I care for my family? Why do I somehow... care?
As these questions flood my mind I walk to the pen where Captin was held. In the back of my mind I know that asking a Pokémon for advice was stupid, but Captin was the only one I could go to. I open the wooden gate, which opens with a creak. Captin was lying down, eyes wide open in boredom, while Ny was fast asleep.
"Captin?" I ask. Captin raises her head, blinking twice at the sight of me. I grab the nearest brush, which was on a shelf next to Captin, and started to brush her head. Captin purred peacefully and laid her head down on my lap.
"Oh Captin," I began, my eyes welling up. I examine her green scales: so light and glossy. A moment of calmness and carelessness enters my mind. I let all the confusion escape. For that one moment, I felt totally carefree. But, unfortunately, that moment wouldn't last very long. I wish it could though. More than ever.
A creaking sound floods my ears as my eyes flutter up. Stormi. I remember the look of disappointment in her eyes when I couldn't remember her.
"Hi," I say with a light voice.
She replies with a simple, "Hey," and plops down next to me. I take a good look at her, her light dim-red hair waving in the clam winds. I turn away. How come I couldn't remember?
Seems to be the common question of the day.
"Listen," Stormi began, breaking the silence, "I need to talk to you."
I turn to her. "About what?"
"About who you are."
