Silence

Carrie smiling shyly.

Carrie looking up at him and laughing.

Carrie making faces at his best man, Ray's corny jokes.

Carrie in her lacy white gown. Glowing in the sunlight before they entered the church.

Carrie saying I do... Carrie toasting with him... dancing with him... laughing with him....

Eric watched their wedding video. Trying to figure what went wrong.

After the wedding, they had spent the night at a luxury resort. The feel of her velvety skin, silky hair, soft lips... It was the most special moment of his life.

Watching the video of their wedding, Eric felt at a loss.

Carrie looked so beautiful... and so happy.

He had to watch it again. There had to be something he was missing.

Why had she felt like this was a mistake?

He watched it a second time. And a third.

It was during the fourth time he saw the change.

"...in sickness and in health till death do you part?"

Carrie was looking up at him. Her eyes shining with happiness.

Eric remembered that moment clearly.

He had looked down at her. The light distilled through the stained glass, dappling her skin.

He had been so unsure about commitment all these years, but at this moment he had known in his heart that she was the one he wanted to spend his life with.

He had smiled down at her and said, "I do."

But something was wrong here, wasn't it?

A subtle shift, that if he wasn't looking for, he would never notice.

In that moment between the question and his answer, he had paused.

And in that pause he saw the light dull in Carrie's eyes. He saw the radiance vanish from her smile.

He had been unsure for so long.

In that moment when he had paused, admiring her... knowing that he had made the right decision... what did she think?

Did she see his momentary silence as hesitation?

Did she think she forced her decision on him?

Whatever she thought, it killed the light in her.

He watched the rest of the video.

She smiled, she laughed, she danced.

But the light in her... that never came back.
