Carter's POV

Pulling everyone's attention from the tea everyone now looked to Alani.

"He caught my eye in a way," Alani grinned looking at me.

"Please do share," Regina goaded.

"He was in this bookstore owned by a friend of mine, that was surprising enough, most people don't really go into bookstores when e-books are a thing. I see him walking around looking at books while I'm looking for poetry."

Liam asks, "You read poetry?"

"When I have the time to yes," she smiled, "so I'm leaving the store so into the book I almost walk into traffic, this man starts carrying on and Carter's defending me. Why? I don't know but he did I was actually really intrigued by it all," a few months ago, I pulled a girl out of the street a car was about to run her over but I didn't know it was her. If she knew me before I knew her why hadn't she said anything to me previously?

"The kitchen staff has prepared a hefty meal personalized to each individual's preferences," Milton came closer to Alani, "Miss seeing as this is our first encounter the staff has not been equipped with the knowledge of how you like things done."

Alani motioned for him to come closer and whispered in his ear leaving both Milton and herself with a smile plastered on their faces.

Alani then turned to me speaking lowly, "Carter when did you begin living with the Leroy's?"

Our home was feeling less like home I was wanted in, I hadn't said much and began feeling like my existence in this household was causing my parents more grief than anything else. I knew they blamed me but I swore I could do nothing to fix what had happened. I would take it back if I could but nothing I did after that was enough. "When I was sixteen," I responded not trying to draw attention to myself.

Regina opened her mouth, "Carter dear did you ask something?"

"No," I responded, my phone vibrated and Lindsey's name popped up, "Excuse me," receiving her call I removed myself from the environment. If they mistreated Alani, I'd expose all of their fraudulent behavior.

Alani's POV

The young man across the table from me asked me with a straight face, "Alani what is it that you see in my younger brother?"

"What do you mean?"

The older man at the table opened his mouth next, "Dear I think he means what attracts you to him?"

"Don't sugarcoat anything, I mean why are you with him?"

Looking at the four faces in my proximity, they were serious and all begging for an answer.

"He's intelligent, his aura is pure yet tainted at the same time, he cares about things like knowledge and he's proud of his company. He's reserved and keeps his composure-"

"So you're saying he's boring," the girl Vanessa opened her mouth. I was tired of her and hoping I would not have to see her and 'play nice' today.

"The opposite actually, he's really interesting and passionate," especially when he punched Daemon, it turned me on and scared me shitless at the same time, "I've seen him lose his composure then regain it like nothing has happened."

Carter's mother questioned, "Does that scare you?'

"Not in the slightest," I answered as the staff brought out the dishes.

"I'm sorry I had a work call," Carter apologized sitting beside me.

He was reaching for my hand and I took it in mine and gave it a tight squeeze. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Vanessa brewing in her seat. She drank her mimosa squirming in her seat at the sight of us.
