Chapter Twenty Three

“And that’s why y equals 57,” Mr Caperman concluded. “Any questions?”
I propped my elbow onto the table, and leaned on my fist. Glancing around, I observed that most of the class were basically asleep. The ones at the back were mostly asleep, and the rest of the class were very close to dozing off, and some were secretly exchanging notes or on their phones.
It was only Isaac Neilson who was paying attention, and eagerly jotting down notes.
“Alright, I’ll write the homework on the board. If you don’t copy it down, it’s not my problem if you rock up to class saying you didn’t know the homework,” Mr Caperman boomed, turning his back to rub the equations off the whiteboard and write the homework.
“Hmmm that was a good nap,” Jodie said to me, turning around to face me from the front.
I grinned. “Lucky you. Every time I try to fall asleep, Mr Caperman’s voice just wakes me up again.”
Jodie raised an eyebrow. “It makes me fall asleep.”
“Again, lucky you,” I shrugged.
“So how was your lunch?” Jodie questioned. “Was it awkward? Especially after last night…?”
I shook my head. “Marcus definitely eased the tension. They had an art class before lunch, and I think they had to draw their family, instead of drawing his real family, Marcus drew Sam, me and himself! Is that not the sweetest thing ever?”
Jodie smiled. “That is soooooooo incredibly cute! If only you and Sam were actually going out. Now that would be the cherry on top.”
My jaw dropped open. “What did you just say?”
Jodie rolled her eyes. “Come on Montana, stop acting so surprised. You know what they say, opposites attract. There’s a thin line between love and hate-
“Okay stop,” I cut in. “Your basically saying that Sam and I actually love each other when we really hate each other?”
Jodie shrugged, twirling a strand of hair around her index finger. “Well…technically no…but I’m just saying you guys could be dating. You guys are really similar believe it or not. You’re both blunt, sarcastic, defensive and you both really care about Marcus. The feud between you two only started because of Rochelle.”
I frowned. “Jodie, you sound like you’re basically shipping us together. Has the universe turned upside down or something?”
Jodie’s eyes twinkled. “Hashtag Mam. Or…Sontana. Sontana Maylor.”
We both burst into laughter at how stupid that sounded.
When we finally recovered, I shook my head and said “That’s ridiculous. So, how was your lunch with Heather and Aaron?”
Jodie shrugged. “It was better than our previous lunches. Heather didn’t show us her picture from art, but anyway, we started talking about all of our different families. Like that sounds weird, but it was actually really interesting. Heather was talking about her family, and her family sounds so rich and wealthy, and she was talking about the giant birthday parties she had, and how at her last birthday party she had a giant jumping castle and a giant ball pit. It was actually really cool.’
I grinned. “What did you learn about Ari?”
Jodie shrugged. “Um…he has a really cheesy Mum?’
I winked. “Sounds like you two are really hitting off, aren’t you?”
Jodie’s eyes glittered, dangerously, and she inched closer. “If you are somehow implying that Aaron and I should date or something like that, I will punch you in the head regardless of the fact that you are my best friend.”
