Grammar

Gender:

In Swedish there are two genders. There are en- words and there are ett- words.

Indefinite Articles

En and ett are the indefinite articles in Sweden, like a is a indefinite article in America or the UK.

Unlike the US or the UK the indefinite article is connected to the noun (person, place, or thing). If the noun already ends in a vowel it takes the suffix -n or -t.

Swedish: En bok - boken

English: a book- the book

Swedish- en pojke - pojken

English- a boy - the boy

Swedish: en bord - bordet

English- a table - the table

Swedish- ett äpple - äpplet

English- a apple - the apple

Verbs

Swedish verbs have only one form making them much easier than verbs of many other languages including English.

Present tense verbs mainly end in -r. We already know two verbs; har and är.

Examples:

Kvinnan har en bok.

The woman had a book.

Vem är pojken?

Who is the boy?

Vad är det? Det är en äpple.

What is that? This is an apple.

Mannen har brevet.

The man has the letter.
