Ok, maybe I shouldn't have turned back into a human. I admit, it would be a freakish experience for most people, but I did not plan on being shut in a cat cage and rushed to meet the 'Great Octavian.' Sheesh, who named him?
I should start where we left off.So, the human was staring at me as if she had never seen a runaway Egyptian demigod who could turn into a cat before. I repeated my statement: "You must take me to the 21st Nome."
The girl stirred. "Uhh..."
"Oh!" I exclaimed. "Tu ne parles pas d'anglais?"
"Oui," she replied. "I mean, non, wait no I mean-"
"You speak English?" I said impatiently. "Then you know I have to get to-"
"A gnome?" she interrupted, confused. "One of those creepy staring garden thingies?"
"N-O-M-E!" I sighed. "The 21st one!"
A blank stare.
"Brooklyn?"
Another blank stare.
"Great," I muttered. "It's a stupid one."I looked down at her. She had golden brown skin and frizzy brown hair, shoulder length and in a hasty ponytail. Her goggles, which were glistening with the sheen of the river water, sat atop her head and she wore a purple t-shirt with letters that were blocked by her dungaree straps.
She cleared her throat. "I don't know anything about n-o-m-es, I'm sorry." Scrambling to her feet, she said: "I'm Isabelle. Isabelle Morgenstern." Holding her hand out, she stepped forwards.
"Emuishere Badawy," I said back, staring curiously at her hand. "What are you doing?"
"You know," she replied. "You shake hands when you greet someone."
"We do not have this custom in Egypt."
I said, but I tentatively took her hand and shook it.I noticed she was staring at me. "Um..." I managed to say. Great job Emuishere.
"Sorry, um, I was just wondering," she said. "Can you do the cat thingy at any time?"
"This cat thingy?" I felt myself shrinking back into a ginger cat, watching the renewed shock on Isabelle's face with amusement. I turned back and we stood in silence for a while."Are you a cat who can turn into a human, or a human who can turn into a cat?" she blurted out.
"Uhhh," I pondered. "I never-"
"Think of what the almighty Octavian could do!" she said, half to herself. "If we had the cat human's blessings..."
"Now hold on-" I exclaimed.
"Maybe..." she put a hand into her tool belt. "Yes!"
Turning to me, her hand still in the belt, she asked if I could turn into any cat.
"Yes," I replied and, without thinking, I demonstrated, watching in dismay as she pulled out the cat cage.
Guess what happened next.Chapters will be published every Monday at roughly this time.
