//002 : MR.EXECUTIVE
i was a bit worried about writing this review, i did like the book, in fact it was nice and had the aesthetic of a cutesy meet-cute office vibe between a personal assistant and a ceo. like always warning for sexual harassment, and watch out for spoilers if you havent read the book go do so now and spoilers start in 3, 2, 1!
so first off the first chapter is basically filler, which obviously is not good for the book and the entire book has several filler chapters, five at the least. it basically has several name brands stocked into the first chapter -- usually i refrain from using too many name brands in a chapter, they also refer to gossip girl once, and we don't know very much about our protagonist in chapter one, which isn't a really good way to start off.
the character luckily doesnt start off as a 'oh im not like other girls' type of protagonist, thank god. i usually cannot stand these type of characters because typically they are mary sue like, and usually are annoying and painful to read about. so she gets an interview and is told to come in the next day for her interview, and lucky for her, she scores the job.
i find it strange how her and her co worker are automatically close enough that the next day they are automatically hugging, usually for me [or any other person for that matter] it could take weeks and weeks -- maybe even months to have that type of development. i don't really like her friend either, as theyre supposed to be / seem to be represented as polar opposites.
anyways, the protagonist is to bring a file to our love interest, and the love interest doesn't even know who she is, even though she works for him. to be fair, it makes sense if he hasnt seen her around because its her first day of work, but her current boss shouldve ATLEAST brought her portfolio and the information to them so they could see who they were.
speaking of our love interest, lets briefly talk about alexander. alexander is cute and like your casual male, but he doesn't have as much personality as i'd expect a character to have? i wish we knew more about his past as a whole and not that he was isolated as a child and had to take care of his sister.
speaking of his sister, we have some lgbtqia+ representation once again! i feel as though alexander is casually being portrayed as panromantic [i am pansexual myself but mostly attracted to women / feminine leaning people] he said that he has had romantic encounters with everyone, but has never dated romantically, in fact, he has never dated anyone since he was 14 [as stated by him himself,] and felt worried about how he should go about dating our protagonist. it's not canon, but it's implied.
his sister is casually portrayed as a lesbian in a relationship with her girlfriend abby, and they plan on getting married, only to state that they are holding it off for a bit. while it's okay to hold off a wedding, [our protagonist and her love interest were engaged for a year and a half as far as i know], i would like to see their wedding one day. we have the casual gay best friend stereotype which is annoying because he only shows up a number of 4-5 times in the book compared to the love interest's sister, who shows up a total of 10-15, i appreciate the casual representation, but they are often shoved off to the side.
