//003 : THE DEVIL IS MY GUARDIAN

in all honesty, i was super excited about reviewing this book and i still am, this is probably one of the books i could read over and over and never ever get tired of. i really love the author's writing style as inconsistent it may be, i really do wish the author didn't vanish off the face off the earth. i'd love to read a sequel for this book, if they ever do come back i'd love it. warnings for sexual harassment, csa and rape, death, homophobia / ace erasure, also abortion mentions, and i'm talking spoilers so if you don't want spoilers begone in 1, 2, and three! alright here we go!

the story has our protagonist ava, [who is an absolute cutie pie] who is suffering from a heart disease and had to overgo heart transplants [pre book and towards the end of the book]. she is quite sarcastic and is one of the protagonists that i'd love to hear more about, i love seeing her interactions with other characters especially like her grandmother, their dynamics are amazing. and it's nice seeing a character who does have a disease and not some overused disease like cancer.

our love interest -- cooper, [which i honestly immaturely laughed at because i thought it said pooper --} is also quite charming. but they both have their...terrible moments. one i'd like to mention is how defenseless ava is when she can run away from her rapist coach. to be fair however, she was drugged during the first time, but the second time she easily could've stormed out of the doors and asked for help, hell even though her and cooper were fighting, she could've called him and asked for help.

i dislike how one of the characters is mentioned and is never seen ever again. it's pretty obvious from the way they were mentioned and how they spoke and their ordeals with our protagonist that they were going to become a major character. i just have a feeling that she was scrapped last minute and they just added her in so we could have another perspective on the protagonist's feelings upon one thing.

i dislike how they handle the topic of one character possibly being gay and pregnancy. the protagonist and her annoying and very much forgettable best friend are shopping to cheer her up because of some cooper drama [it's been a month since i read the book leave me alone if im wrong]. and they see the guy the best friend's was hooking up with, braxton, in a 'gay store' and her best friend is very insensitive about it.

the reason i have a problem with it is how half assed the protagonist's apology is about it, her literal apology is "i don't care if you're gay, you're still my friend!" like no shit, he knows yall are still friends. it's like she didn't even try. she easily could've rephrased it like : "i'm sorry that my best friend was being very insensitive about your sexuality, i apologize on behalf of my best friend and i hope you don't lose faith in your identity," it's hinted that braxton may be ace but the author has inconsistent writing [style] so we never even figure that out. and he's very uncomfortable with the fact of him possibly being a father.
