*Excelsior*

Bring me high to where the stars sleep,

For me to hug the clouds and tease

The fairies to oblivion deep

And roam as far as I would please.

High o'er the mounts that seem most steep

Lies my cradle on Heaven's knees;

Watching a forlorn goddess weep

To fill with new life all the seas.

For, what bonds can Earth hold me to

If I shall spread my wings--and soar?

How strong's the storm that Hell should brew

To keep me from God, to know Him more?

I see the moonbeams dancing by

To the hymn of the morning star;

I see the graceful, splendid sky

Beckon to me as though not far.

So bring me high, where the winds rest

For me to touch the iris; wake

The twilight from its pensive nest

And roam the paths that fate will make.
