THE EAGLE'S SONG
At the distance staring back at me I set my eyes
And wings I spread, to break the ties
That this dire earth so holds me to;
I am an eagle, my fate's to rise
Far beyond untrespassed blue.
I am an eagle, born to kiss the azure
Where comes no pureness near as pure;
Far above these clouds of fleece,
I'm born to sail the winds demure
And taste a smack of Heaven's peace.
For I am an eagle, baptized in ether,
And with the sylphs I kinship claim;
E'en my wings soon flaccid wax, it never
Will quench that deathless flame
That, e'en if I die, will burn forever.
