I'D BOTHER NOT TO KNOW
A sufficing smack I stole
Of childhood's relish sweet;
Riding the tip of the thread of life
And dreaded not a woe to meet.
I partook of the thousand chances
Of the turnpikes of adolescence;
I shrouded myself in the chrysalis
That shut me off from innocence.
Then I mounted life's tallest peaks
And learn to its facades distinguish;
Years have come to etch in me
Its lessons with the ink of anguish.
Like a ghost they passed by me,
The times faded into sightless deep.
And from afar a shapeless morrow
Calls me to eternal sleep.
Wanting rest, I closed my eyes
Beneath this deeply furrowed brow;
And what has death in store for me
I'd bother not to know.
