Minerva McGonagall a woman aged 53 had a soft corner for few of her students. She would never accept this if you asked her, but she knew that it existed. The marauders batch was probably the only batch, where she had a soft spot for too many students at once.
James Potter, a pure blood, child of a light family, entitled to the title of Lord in future, but only a mischievous prankster at core. A natural student at transfiguration, and flying. Charms DADA, he did almost perfectly, could have been better at potions. He had every quality a Gryffindor must posses.
Sirius Black, the son of notorious Black family, again entitled to the title of Lord in near future, a person who had generations in Slytherin, was shocked himself, and so was the entire Great Hall when the Hat shouted, “Gryffindor”. To say Minerva wasn’t shocked would be a lie. The entire great Hall including Albus Dumbledore was shocked. He was a born rebel and prankster. It hadn’t been easy for the Black family to accept that their heir had been sorted into Gryffindor. They had tried resorting, but Sirius Black was brave, he was chivalrous, he was a charmer. When he abused in his family, Minerva became his mother. No she didn’t tell him that ever, but she ensured that something wouldn’t happen to him. She convinced the Potter family to take him in their residence. She did everything possible for him to stay happy.
Remus Lupin, a child bitten at the age of 5. He had his family, who were loving and supporting. He had the staff at Hogwarts for him, but what happens when at that young an age the a boy has to fight a monster within themselves. The monster which cannot be destroyed. A monster which threatens to take away your conscience and sanity? She had seen how much fight Remus had with himself. He found solace with the Marauders.
Lily Potter neé Evans, was another bright Muggleborn. She was a gifted witch and a simple pure hearted woman. A woman who loved all heartedly, who tried finding good in people, who took in the brighter side of everything.
That batch of Marauders, it was the best lot Gryffindor house had in quite a lot of time. They excelled in everything, be it academics extra curriculars. Or be it life. Two Aurors, another studying for her mastery in Potions. They were going to be the best, she knew that.
But no, Sirius went ahead and destroyed everything. He went ahead and as good as killed Potters’. He shoved Remus into darkness, and he orphaned a kid. She wasn’t going to forgive him.
After putting Harry into the cradle she had transfigured, she asked Mike the house elf to look after him. And went to the dungeons. Sirius had been transported here and she wanted a few answers before she threw him into Askaban.
She descended to the place, and found Sirius still in shock. She thought it was the shock of his master getting killed. She wanted to know why, he didn’t care about his best friend, and his godson. She wanted answers, and she would make him speak.
She conjured a chair for herself and sat in front of him. To see him distraught clenched her heart, but she wouldn’t give in. She wanted answers. And he was a traitor. He was the spy. He had killed way too many people to be forgiven.
“Minerva, James!” sirius shouted. More like shrieked. She couldn’t take this, his name from a traitors mouth. No she went and slapped him, a physical action. There wasn’t much which could enrage McGonagall to an extent that she used physical slaps, and not her wand. But Sirius has did it. A person who she treated almost as her own, had killed another of her sons’ it was an unforgivable crime in the eyes of the elder professor.
“Don’t you take his name with that traitor tongue of yours.” She slapped him again. Sirius accepted. Of course it was his crime. He had coaxed James into using Peter as a secret keeper. It was his crime that he himself hadn’t taken up the job. He thought it was a master stroke, the death eaters will be after him. They might as well win. But they would never know. He had nothing to tell them. He trusted Peter with his Godson’s life, it was his crime after all.
“I’m sorry Minerva. I didn’t foresee this. I know I should have, but I didn’t. Now they are dead. My Harry,...” he was slapped again.
“Don’t you take his name from your filthy tongue. He is your Godson and you gave him in the hands of a killer. And then you have the audacity to say that you did not foresee this?” she said. Glaring daggers at him.
Sirius agreed with her. Of course how could he. How could he trust the person, with least guts. They accepted Peter as a tag along. How could he take him and give him the biggest secret.
It was all his fault. His fault that his best friend, and Lily was dead. It was all his fault that Harry would have to grow up without his parents.
“I’m sorry. I am sorry Minerva this was the biggest mistake of my life, trusting...” this time Minerva couldn’t take it. She pointed her wand at him and said, “Crucio” she was in rage. Her student had the nerve to call it a mistake. Taking the lives of people was a unforgivable crime. It wasn’t something a simple sorry would suffice.
It felt good to have his shrieks fill the dungeon. To have him under her wand, to have him helpless, to have him at her mercy. She could see why someone would love using this.
“I’m sorry! I apologise, but I know I deserve more. Much more than this, don’t stop Minnie, I shouldn’t be forgiven.” He said when she released him from her spell.
“And you wouldn’t be Mr. Black. You have my word.” She replied and walked away from the dungeons. As she didn’t want to stoop to the level of death eaters. If she were honest with herself, she didn’t like the fact that she enjoyed it.
She went to check on Harry. Mike had told her he had kept him in the nursery. Nursery which she had made in hopes of a baby. Who know after all this years, it was meant for Harry. She smiled at him. The child calmed her down. The innocence that he radiated was all she needed for getting her anger in control.
She studied the curious wound on his head. It was shaped like a lightening. There was no doubt that this was where the curse had struck him. That this mark wouldn’t go ever. But that was all she could guess. She knew she would require Dumbledore’s help for this mess. But she couldn’t afford that. If she asked him, she knew he would know what she had done, and also that he would probably convince her of the “Greater Good” like he quoted. No, she couldn’t afford that. Because this greater good, wasn’t really good for Harry.
She kept Harry back in the cradle. He would require a good sleep if her were to get over the events of today, she was about to get away when the child grabbed her finger in his firm grip and said, “Ma” this strengthened her resolve. She wouldn’t subject this upon a child.
She had work at hand. If she wanted to keep Harry with her, there was lot that needed to be done. She needed to find a family which would be able to take Harry in, and yet not raise him to be a brat. He needed a family with love, and attention. The later of which she couldn’t provide. She was the Head of Gryffindor house. She could not just abandon her job. And more over she wouldn’t be given Harry. She was too old for it. No, she needed the right family.
She flooed to Hogwarts into headmasters office. Only to find a very disturbed Albus. She knew Albus could find out within minutes that she had Harry, but he would never know where. McGonagall Castle was far away and far hidden by both Muggles and Magical means for anyone to figure out.
She knew Harry was safe. The school had been given a weeks off. To celebrate the downfall of dark. She had one week to ensure this safety.
Authors Notes-
Hiya all. Or whoever that is reading. I’m sure not many of you are, as we have all read some or another version of this. I have read quite a few fics, and I assure you I haven’t stumbled on the story I’m trying to tell. But that’s all I can say, of of course there might be the same thing, there are a many works around.
Having said that, I know quite a few would he offended that Minerva enjoyed Crucio but trust me I haven’t meant to destroy her character. It’s just that I think that spell gives anyone a sense of control which would be welcome. That is only human nature. But I may be wrong.
So enjoy the fic and do tell me your views.
Happy reading
