Remus Lupin had come back from the underground when he figured that the war was one, but the lion was lost. He lost his best friend, brother, all in one day. Sirius had been the secret keeper. They said he had given the secret away, and lured Voldemort into Potters residence.
He didn’t know how much of it he believed. He knew Sirius, he knew that Sirius loved James as a brother. He knew that the man consider his godson, as his pup. It was unbelievable that the same man was behind the murder of his best friends.
He knew that Sirius hated voldemort with all his might he also knew that he had tried to convince his brother to join the light side or at least stay neutral, but to no avail.
He knew that, Sirius had hated his own family for practising dark arks, for acknowledging every person, as a possible alliance or a possible threat. He believed in real relations. He believed in friendship, and however corny it may sound in love.
He knew that Sirius if need be would sacrifice his own life for James, Peter, or even himself, though he didn’t consider himself to be that important. But he knew his friend did.
All this he knew, but he also knew that, Sirius had been the secret keeper, that the secret was given away to none other than Voldemort. And that only a secret keeper could give the secret away.
But it didn’t fit. It didn’t fit with Sirius. It didn’t fit that Sirius would murder James, lily and would try to have Harry killed. He was the first one who suggested that they go into hiding on figuring out that Harry may in threat due to Voldemort.
He was the one who had the brightest smile when pronounced as the Godfather of the kid. He was the one, who swore to protect the child at all costs. Then how could he give away a vital secret. If the stories were to be trusted. He did that on his own, he did it when he was sane, and the secret isn’t given away by Veritaserum either.
It technically meant Sirius wanted to give it away. The rumor had it, that Peter was hunting for Sirius. That he wanted to find him, so as to avenge his friend. He wanted to applaud his behaviour. He wasn’t the brave one. He would not go against Sirius, if on his own. He must really be after by the loss.
But still the things didn’t fit. And where was Harry. Dumbledore said he was safe, but if he was reading it right, Dumbledore didn’t have the confidence or knowledge of where he was. He had always been a good judge of character, and he couldn’t believe that his best friend had killed another of his best friends.
And he wasn’t even found. Out of years of experience Remus knew that, if Sirius accomplished something which he wanted to that is, the whole world would know about it. He would rub it in your face until you acknowledge his accomplishment. If for the sake of arguments one were to accept that Sirius was indeed behind this unspeakable act, why was he not coming forward to claim it. To claim that he is the right hand man of Voldemort. That he is himself trained by Voldemort.
Which was another thing that didn’t really fit. Sirius had been with them for most of the times, how and when was he trained by the Mouldywart himself.
There were way too many questions and zero answers. If only he were here these past days, he would have known what was happening. He would have know what really happened because as far as he was concerned, he didn’t really know anything. With the amount of responsibility Dumbledore had given him, he could find more time to spend with his friends.
He couldn’t tell about it either. He was supposed to keep it to himself. There had been a spy in the order. He had been ordered to not tell his work to whoever who need not know. So he functioned in secret. No contact from any of his friends.
All this basically meant that he didn’t know what happened. But after so many years he had learnt to trust his gut. And his gut said there was too much of story that he was missing. Peter behaving brave, and everything with Sirius didn’t fit.
He had a very weird thought nagging in the back of his mind. The one for which he couldn’t do anything. What if in his missing periods people considered him to be? No that couldn’t be
He had no choice but to find his friends and figure out their truth. Because it certainly wasn’t what it looked like. He had already, blamed Sirius once without his fault. He had blamed him and didn’t accept his apology later.
He vividly remembered that day. Severus had conned Sirius into telling the secret. He knew Sirius didn’t realise what he was baiting him with, Severus had said, “What dark secrets are you hiding in the closet black? Going too meet the dark powers that you wish to accomplish and keep up your family name. could be friends you know if only you would leave Potters side. And come to power. I’m sure you’d have thing or two to teach me. We can be allies Black, you can leave your filthy friends and join the House of Slytherin.”
He didn’t realise when that sly basted provoked him enough to tell him about The Shrieking Shack. I dint think I could forgive him for that, when I finally realised that he had been provoked and that he didn’t do it just for fun. He realised that he was still a friend, a stupid one probably but he didn’t mean to harm.
That day he swore that he would never mistrust Sirius again. Definitely not without proof. Now was the time to fulfil that promise.
