Chapter 12:

When I woke up I felt frozen. My skin was pale and bright red where it had touched the ice. My shoulder ached but I was too numb to feel the rest of its pain. I was surprised to see myself in the same location I fell asleep in. I half prepared myself to see a dark den where other wolves prepared for their feast. Why didn’t the wolf eat me when it had the chance?

I turned my head to the side and saw not a beast…not a monster or wolf but…a bloody man. I sat up gently, my body protesting at the movement and checked his lifeless body. He wore a dirty, marked pair of briefs that hung low on his toned hips. Blood pooled at his side staining the snow.

It reminded me of when I found my brother. Holding back tears I rested my head again his chest. Luckily, the man’s heart was still beating and I sighed with relief.

This young man must have been another prey for the wolf. My eyes widened as I searched my surroundings. I couldn’t hear anything unusual in the morning air.

I need to get us both out of here before we either die of hypothermia or another animal that comes along. I picked up the dagger from beside me, it was painted red with the wolf’s blood. I had survived, only just. Maybe I had killed the beast…what if he had run away to die? I felt my heart fill with hope, but I can’t let myself feel this way because he could still be alive and come back for revenge.

I got off the ground, my arm was so stuff I could barely move it. My burn wasn’t noticeable, only on occasion when something brushed against it. My gown was a different situation; I was tattered, hardly together at all.

I grabbed the mans underarms and started to heave. My right arm was practically useless but I was able to get us some distance away before I had to stop. My bare feet were cut up and frozen solid. I leant against a tree, my hands shaking as my body warmed.

I carried on dragging for twenty minutes longer, occasionally listening to the silence cautiously. I believe we were far enough for now and the melting snow would cover some of our tracks. My body was really starting to ache now, my shoulders killed and I was shivering dramatically from the cold.

I found a low gap in some rocks. It was coming off a small hill of abandoned boulders and broken trees. I ducked my head in quickly to discover the tiny room empty. There were some evidence of old animal habitats but it didn’t look like anything had been in here for a while; which was a good sign.

I scrambled in quickly and leant out dragging the man inside as carefully as I could. It was a lot warmer in here since most of the wind was rolling over the top of the cave. I sat on the ground leaning my back and head against the wall. The ceiling brushed at my hair and my feet were a meter and a half away from the wall.

I was so sore and I was shivering so much I couldn’t keep still. I was so tired and I knew I needed to sleep but I needed to help this man too. I ripped a long piece of my grown and wrapped it around my arm and tied it with my hand and teeth. I needed the protection of the gooey blister that was beginning to burn horribly.

I could do nothing about my shoulder yet and I didn’t want to look at it because I was too afraid of what I would see. I ripped more of my gown and fed it under his body. It was really hard for me to lift him again because I was getting so weak. I wrapped some more around him a few times and tied it on his other side. When I tightened it he groaned and I almost jumped.
