Chapter 17:
Breakfast was slow and agonising. Logan just stared at his food, playing around with it before putting a few mouthfuls in. I ate quickly and spent the rest time trying to think of something to say to him. I didn’t approve of the tense air around us from our previous conversation. I couldn’t leave it hanging like that. I cared way too much for Logan and I wasn’t going to ruin it by ignoring what happened.
I had to say something, quickly, before we grew apart because he couldn’t trust me with his history.
“Are you mad at me?” Is all I said. I felt stupid but it was a start.
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
Logan looked up through his lashes. “Yes.”
“Are you upset then?”
“Why are you asking me all these questions?”
“Because I said something and you...froze up. I just want you to know that...y-you can trust me. I’ll always be there.”
“Nothings wrong, you can drop it.”
“But I don’t want to. I want to know you even your past because it’s part of you. You don’t have to be afraid of what I’ll think because I will always trust you and believe in you.”
“Something’s you don’t want to know.”
“But I do-”
“Alice, I’m not going to tell you! I don’t want to tell you, it is my choice, even if I trust you. Something’s in my past and present need to be kept secret.”
I closed my mouth and looked down at my empty plate. I stayed silent for a few moments trying to think of something to say that wouldn’t irritate him more. “I’m sorry…I shouldn’t have asked.”
Logan sighed heavily and rubbed the space vigorously between his brows. I knew he was frustrated with me, but why? Logan rose to his feet ignoring the meal in front of him and stormed away.
“Where are you going?”
“Out.”
I looked out the window and saw snow falling steadily. Everything was white and freezing cold. What was he thinking? “You can’t go outside, you’ll get ill.”
“I’ll take my chances.”
I stood also. “Don’t leave because of me. Please.”
“I’m not, I just need some fresh air.”
“But what about the wolf? It’s kill you. You’re not even bringing a weapon.”
“The wolf isn’t out there anymore!” he snapped. “It won’t hurt you anymore. Just, leave it, Alice.”
He wouldn’t look at me, and that hurt. Logan couldn’t reject me already, could he? I never thought he would after what we shared. I wanted to cry but I couldn’t in front of him. That would be pitiful. My lip trembled—I couldn’t stop that—and my heart thumped loud in my chest.
“Don’t be out for long.”
He pulled open the door and a massive swell pushed itself against him. His hair blew wildly about his face making his eyes squeeze shut. “I promise,” he said, just loud enough for me to hear.
Then he disappeared.
*~*~*
I was huddled in front of the fire, wrapped up in a fur blanket, asleep when I felt cold lips against my temple. I moaned as my body woke and turned to face Logan. I opened up the blanket and snuggled further into him. “You’re finally back?”
