Chapter 6

The hut loomed before me like a castle in the dark. Its windows were shaded and cracked with age, grime clouding the edges. The wood was aged and eaten at by termites, and the stairs creaked with every step I took. This hut was one of the oldest in the village, seeming as it was handed down my family for generations.

I would be living here right now if it wasn’t the fact that my father became mayor. I loved this place because it had potential. It was homey and made me feel safe so that was the reason why I am here right now. I knocked on the door, the paint flecking off onto the wood beneath my feet. I could hear some shuffling inside, and then the door creaked as it opened.

Standing in front of me was my grandmother. Her wrinkles were evident on her face, showing laugh lines and tired lines. Her cheeks were pink from the warm air of the hut. She was still a very bright and active woman. She has taught me nearly everything I know and I have been so grateful of everything she has done for me.

When she saw me her whole face brightened up. Her lips turning up into a smile and her eyes shining. They were a very dark blue, unusual since I had never seen eyes like her before. I used to say that she had the oceans in her eyes because they would seem ravenous when she was angry and calm when she was happy. She used to say that maybe I was a mermaid because I am a descendant of her sea and because of my beauty. I had always dreamed of one day becoming a mermaid but the more I think about it, the sillier it sounds.

“Hello sweetheart. Why do I have the pleasure of your visit?” my grandmother said standing to the side allowing me in.

I stepped in shaking my cloak and hanging it on the hook. Heat from the fire warmed me and melted the snow on my boots. I shivered and sat down on one of the fury chairs.

“Do you know of wolf?” I sighed clasping my hands together on my lap.

“Oh yes. Gossip travels on swift winds.” She said hobbling over and sitting on the couch across from me. “Terrible news. I hear there were two people almost killed. A Matt and a girl, I don’t know my ears may deceive me.” She laughed.

“Me, grandmother. I was the girl. I almost got killed and something killing me inside also. I am so scared.” I said in a rush. I sobbed and tears fell from my eyes.

My grandmother’s face looked sad. She leant over and grabbed my hand. Hers was warm and soft but callused showing that she was a tough and a working woman. I looked down at them seeing the wrinkles and the overlapping skin. As the years go by the skinnier her hands get. Her bones were very evident under the skin and her knuckles were larger than normal. She had arthritis in the knuckles making it very hard to move the joints.

I felt very comforted.

“Sadly I think this isn’t the first time you have cried today. What is eating at your soul, my love? You can tell Granny, I would never do anything to hurt you.” I took a deep breath preparing to tell her but I was caught off by the whistle of the kettle. “Sorry dear, just a second. Would you like some tea?”

“Sure.” I said with a smile not showing the under layer of fatigue.

My grandmother got up and pulled the kettle off the fire. She grabbed two tea cup of her finest collection from the shelf above her. She filled the tea pot full of the boiling water and placed in some tea leaves. She placed some milk and sugar and everything else onto a tray and made her way back over again. I always liked to watch this. Picturing her as me some day making tea for my very own granddaughter and telling her I would always keep her secrets safe.
