The following week at school everything was back to the way it was. Well it would appear that was but Charlie could still feel that silent tension between her and Holden. Things couldn't go back to the way they were after Holden's confession. Sure she liked him back but he deserved someone better than her. Her being mute has never bothered her before but now it was. Holden deserved to be with someone he could have a two sided verbal conversation. Not someone who moved their hands to make silent conversation. He may feel like he wouldn't mind now but what if later in life he got fed up. It could be a reason for them to split up. He might not get everything out of the relationship that he might want.
Charlie wasn't too acceptable to taking risks that she should. She can't be held back by the what ifs. He was the one that confessed to her first. But how could she tell Holden that she liked him back? It wasn't like she could blurt it out to him. Sure he was a happy guy that was sure to give any girl a good time and the love that someone should get. But was she really the winner of his affections. All the people at school and he chose her. Why? Why her? For what reason? She was average with her blue eyes and mousy brown hair while Holden was outstanding with his devastatingly bright hazel eyes and his deep black hair. He was phenomenal in every way possible.
Unknowingly Charlie had been staring at her feet while sitting on the bleachers during Holden's morning practice. She failed to notice that they had finished until a heavy, wet arm was draped over her shoulders. She immediately cringed and tried to get away. Holden only laughed and brought her in closer to his chest. She was already wet, no need to fight him now.
"What's up, buttercup?" He questioned. Charlie only shrugged her shoulders. Not even bothering with asl knowing that he wouldn't even understand her. Another complication. This relationship wouldn't last if they couldn't communicate. They couldn't rely on a pen and paper or his mother for conversation. He needed to at least meet her halfway.
"C'mon, Charlie, I know something's up. You're frowning more than usual. I know I'm the one in the relationship with the smiles but you shouldn't frown so much. I heard it gives you wrinkles fast. No way Josè, no wrinkles for me." He joked, swaying them both somewhat. There was that word. Relationship. What was their relationship like now. They were friends but closer but not yet dating. Was there such a term for an almost couple?
Then the bell rang causing Holden to curse and Charlie to jump at the sudden loudness. Holden got up, offering her his hand that she accepted without hesitation before she could talk herself out of it. He held her hand as they both walked down the bleachers to the changing rooms. The other swim team members were walking out already. They said their hello's and goodbye's to both of of the shy teens holding hands.
"I know that we're going to be late but I need to ask, would you maybe, possibly, think about going out on a, now you can say no, but a date? Nothing too flashy ya know?" He asked nervously, blush spreading down his neck to the upper part of his toned chest.
Well she thought things were going back to normal but it was clear that Holden wanted more. Charlie wouldn't admit it but she wanted more too. She nodded with a small smile, looking down, her hair sliding down her face. Holden pushed her hair behind her ear and tilted her head up by putting his curved pointer finger under her chin. His thumb slightly brushing her bottom lip. Blush quickly covered her cheeks.
"Great, I'll pick you up tonight at seven, see you later." He bent down and placed a light kiss on her cheek before he backed away into the dressing room. He left Charlie standing there like a fish straight out of the water. She took a step back and another before she found herself jogging away to her class. She had a date tonight. She was actually going on a date. A real date.
