1998, I have a friend called Josh. He has a weird hobby, probably because of the stuff about hypnotizing on the Jurisprudence Daily, and he's been crazy about it.
It was during a self-study session in class when Josh approached the teacher(probably more than half a century old) with everyone's eyes staring at him.
"Now close your eyes, have the feeling of the ocean and the big blue sky, take off your clothes and dive into them, let the warmth surround you and relax. Okay, when I count to five, you'll give me a hundred for my exam paper. One, two, three, four, five......"
Awkward silence. The teacher put down his pen and said, "if you can get a hundred just by having me strip naked, I wouldn't mind doing so."
The next thing we knew is Josh being sent for detention, but without a clear reason. Rumours spreaded from other classes saying that : he was sent for detention for attempting to hit on a retiring chemistry teacher.
Ten years past and I did not catch up with him much, but just one day i realised that he was living in the same neighbourhood where i just moved to.
2008, a drink-driving accident occurred near the neighbourhood. 7 were killed, 3 males and 4 females. It took more than an hour to wash off all the blood stains on the road.
Three weeks after the incident, friends of the victims were burning incense paper along the road. They said that they could hear the victims crying almost every night. Once the sun sets, the neighbourhood turns dark and eerie, sobbing can be heard late at night even if you were at home. An old man said, the departed spirits are trying to find their way home, try not to go out at night from now on.
Days later, I left work at around 1am. The taxi driver have seen the newspaper and made me alight the cab just outside the main gate. There's nobody around as I walked along the creepy alley home. I avoided piles and piles of incense paper as I walked home when suddenly, a chill went down my spine as I felt a breeze from behind. I quickened my steps.
"Oh my godness......"
Footsteps from behind, just one beat slower than mine.
"Wayne? You are Wayne right?"
I turned.
Blood.
Under the streetlight, the "person's" body is covered in red, with blood still dripping from his fingertips. He threw himself on me.
Black out.
Woke up, in my room, with Josh smiling at me.
"Bro, have a glass of water."
I was stoned, Josh told me, he was on his way home too before seeing me, so he hypnotized me. Just pranking me.
"The...... bloody person......" I stuttered.
He laughed, "it's just an illusion."
"How did you come in my house?"
"Hypnotize, I controlled you to make your way home, and opened the door youself."
Oh lord.
He showed me the time: 7 minutes to 2am. Which means, the whole hypnotize thing took only 10 minutes or so......
I questioned," aren't you supposed to tell someone about the sky and the ocean, dive in and feel the warmth or something?"
"Nope. The key to hypnotizing is the sense of rhythm. When a person is asleep, his heartbeat's rhythm would be slower, but not everyone's rhythm is the same. A professional hypnotizer only needs a short time to confirm your heartbeat's rhythm, and then use other factors from the outside world to get your heartbeat's rhythm to slow down and get into that of a sleeping condition, "
"Finally, through the blood circulation to your brain, it can control your thinking and then your body," he finished off, looking triumphant.
So that's what you did to me you little......
"For me, you used footsteps......" I suddenly realised.
Josh nodded.
"Wouldn't that be dangerous? Controlling someone's state of mind and do whatever he is told to do?"
"Dude, the world is a dangerous place."
"If it is in a noisy environment, it wouldn't be easy to hypnotize right?" I asked.
But Josh shiook his head this time. No matter what environment it is, it is still possible. He can easily record a hypnotizing rhythm and save it as a ringtone.
"The moment you call me, you'll be hypnotized too."
I stared at him, unbelievable, "Everyone?"
Josh paused for a while, and said,"only to certain people, especially with people who have a strong sense of consciousness. People who are hot-tempered, impatient, are the easiest people to get distracted by things happening around them."
Examples: those who get tired easily, those who get hungry in the middle of the night, those who cannot stop their urge to check their phones right after they wake up etc...
These people have a higher tendency of getting hypnotized.
I paused too. But something hit me suddenly," what are doing walking around on the streets at this time?"
"Too many people looking for me,just finding a spot to hide."
"What?"
He nodded and smiled again,"Yep, the driver was my wife."
I looked at his smile as the horrific scene flashed across my mind, I stood rooted to the ground as the absolute horror completely paralysed me.
He continued smiling, as he approached me step by step, forcing me to move back.
"Shhhh..... She found out my secret."
I retreated to the corner,"what secret?"
He stopped closing in, still smiling ,"there are many people like me, in every corner of the city. Do you know who would enslave us?"
Before I could even answer, he continued,
"Stop guessing. Come on ; one, two, three, four, five, time to tear down your apartment."
