"So what are you in for?" Legolas asks you. You were still sitting against the bars. Judging by the orange light coming in from your tiny, barred window, the sun was setting. All you could see through it was a patch of sky, and you liked it that way. Nothing but you and the sky. Well, you, the sky, and Legolas.

"Ugh. I'd rather not talk about it," You say.

"I'm here because I protected an innocent child," he says quietly. You glanced up sharply. "What did they need to be protected from?"

"The king. Who else?" He says. You just shrugged. You both sat in silence until the light faded from the cell. You opened your mouth to tell him why you were here several times, but shut it again.

You got up and walked to your window and looked out. You felt someone brush your side and turned to see Legolas beside you. But he wasn't looking at the stars. He was looking at you. You turn away quickly and motion out the window.

"Valacirca. It's the only constellation I can see from here," You say. "A challenge and a warning to Morgoth." You say, gazing up at the group of stars and dreaming about a better life, one far away.

"You really love stars, don't you?" Legolas asks. You blushed a little and looked down. There was something about Legolas that catches you off your guard.

"Yes. They shine so bright, and they're so far away, like a promise of happiness. And yet, sometimes, it almost seems like you can reach out and grab them," You say. You hadn't meant to say so much.

"Do they seem close now?" Legolas asks quietly.

"They have never seemed further away," you say, blinking rapidly. You will not cry in front of Legolas. I am strong, you say to yourself. They cannot break me.

You turn away from the window and grab the blanket of the cot.

"I'll sleep on the ground," you say, subtly wiping your nose.

"No-" Legolas starts to say. You just lay on the ground and ignore him. Eventually, he sighs, and you hear the creak of the cot as he lays down.

*****Legolas's POV*****

I had seen her crying. She had very little hope left, this girl made of fire and starlight. I feared the day when her hope would run out. She was beautiful, staring at the stars. I wondered if she would ever see the world she imagined when she looked at the far-off lights. I had promised to only be her friend, but she was irresistible in a mystical way, like no one I had ever met. It;s like she's homesick for someone she hasn't met yet or a place she hasn't been yet.

*****Your POV*****

You woke up with a stiff  neck. You stretched it and groaned as the stiff muscles shifted. Legolas was still sleeping. You didn't mean to, but you stared at him. In sleep, all the worry lines of his face smoothed away, making him look younger, more peaceful.

"Stop staring at me," Legolas says without opening his eyes. You squeak a little and wrench your eyes away. He smirks a little.

"Friends, Legolas!" You say. He opens his eyes and gets up, rubbing the sleep from his eyes and walking closer to you, until your chests are almost touching. Heat radiates off him.

"I don't think that's gonna happen," he says in a soft voice. You gasp a little. He steps back. and you miss his body heat, his closeness, before you shake yourself out of it.

****Time Skip: A Week Before D-Day*****

It was getting harder and harder to keep your distance from Legolas. You had grown more comfortable with Legolas as the days went past. He took every chance to step closer to you or touch your hair or trail his hand along your arm. At least you didn't smell bad, since they took you out occasionally and threw you in an underground lake.
