Barry was curious; Yaya seemed to be avoiding him. She was warm and her normal cute cheerful self to every other member on the set except him. "What have I done now?" wondered Barry. She seemed to have become Darunee, the brat she was playing in the lakorn--sulking and sullen. Barry caught sight of Yaya roaming off into the rice fields by herself after lunch and he chased after her.
"What's up? Why are you mad at me?" he asked pretending to paw at her shoulder like a little kitten.
"Nothing. Who says I'm mad at you?" she retorted walking away.
"Oh don't do this to me. Please, what is it?" he asked wheedlingly.
"Well," she answered tired of keeping it in for so long, "you know how you like to chew gum and spit it out. What's worse, you like to play with your gum?"
"Yesss...." Barry responded uncertainly.
"You spit the gum out at me, two weeks ago. When I reached home and brushed my hair and the gum was at the root of my hair. I cried in frustration. My mom even tried to brush it out but it didn't work. The gum was stuck, lodged and practically glued to my scalp. I had to cut my hair because of it," she glared at him angrily.
"I was going to tell you but you had already left for the day. I'm so....sorry...please, please. I'm sorry. It was unintentional," he said looking very adorable and repentant.
She looked at him and smiled sweetly and he knew they were good again.
Later in the day, Barry was applying lotion to ensure that his elbows would not become ashy and dry. Cheekily, he called out in her direction, "Come put some lotion on your elbows. I won't love a woman with ugly elbows." He left the lotion on the table and soon Yaya and a group of women were obediently oiling their elbows.
"He really is too cool for his own good," thought Yaya looking at all the women around her rubbing their elbows.
Yaya knew that they had good chemistry and a good working relationship because at some level she understood him and could anticipate his reaction. He was in many ways like Arthit, the character he was acting: hardworking, responsible, purposeful and caring. They played off each other's expressions so well because of their familiarity with each other. She was starting to suspect that Barry knew she was head over heels for him. How could she not be crazy over a guy who seemed to get along with everyone? The farm workers turned actors, and him were so funny together; he was patient and gentle with the elderly; and he was even good with children. The beautiful countryside did not help matters. Golden wheat fields, lavender bushes, strawberries and oranges heightened her senses and just the sight of him appearing made her tingle. This was bad she needed to play things cool too and not appear too eager for his attention. She made sure that when she made desserts for him there was enough for everyone so that no one would suspect. This lakorn had taught her that the proper Thai way was to be like Darunee, she had to wait for him to come to her and not pressure him by her expressions of affection.
Barry watched Yaya from his bench. He enjoyed working with her because they knew each other's rhythm. They could be friends for a long time. She was spunky and obviously in love with him. He was uncertain of how to respond to her attention; it made him feel shy and so he resorted to teasing her and playing tricks on her. She was too shy to get him back and that made him want to protect her even more, even if it meant protecting her from himself. If in the long term, he wanted to return to the countryside and work amongst the rural poor, hooking up with him would definitely limit her life or career plans. It bothered him when he learnt in his university course that businesses could not find suitable candidates to hire because of the high numbers of unskilled workers mainly living in rural areas. Furthermore, English capability in Thailand was much lower that some other ASEAN nations, and this was making it hard for them to access global markets. Did it bother him enough to do something about it? Could Yaya cope with a rural lifestyle? Would their easy friendship and growing affection last long term?
Barry was learning a lot from the scriptwriters of this lakorn. He really liked the scene in the garden, when Grandma wisely said to Athit "If you conduct yourself like a plant or a root and be mindful of the earth in which you live in, no matter what obstacles you face in life, you will overcome them."
Laughter from the kitchen made him look up. Yaya had convinced the cook to teach her how to fry an egg, Barry hopped off his bench and walking towards her decided to just enjoy each moment as it came and let the future take care of itself.
