Yaya had been in London for three days and her sister had already lined up a number of language teaching jobs and work as an interpreter for her. In three days, her world had changed and she was just an ordinary person going for interviews and roaming the shops on her own while her sister was at work. Apart from calling her mum via Skype, she had cut off all contact from Thailand. She did not want to know what the media was saying.
Sitting in a cafe near the apartment, Yaya remembered the advertisements they had done together. As she drank her coffee, she remembered Barry and her advertising coffee.
As she took a bite of her cupcake she remembered another advertisement.
Drats! Even here in another country, every thing she saw reminded her of him. She was even starting to hallucinate.
"Boy, that guy who rushed past my window sure looks like Barry," she thought to herself sadly as she tried a piece of designer chocolate to cheer herself up. The sound of panting and heavy breathing made her look up. Barry was clutching his sides and trying hard to breathe. He sat down with a loud plop on the chair beside her and tried to talk.
"What are you doing here?" asked Yaya, half delighted to see his face and half wondering if she was dreaming. She pinched her arm to just to make sure.
"I...I came to look for you," he said wheezing and sniffing.
"Do you need to use your inhaler for your asthma?" she asked concerned.
"Lies, lies.....cough, cough. I saw the food in my refrigerator, cough, cough...Piak was lying," he gasped for air. Yaya reached over and thumped him on the back.
"Just talk later. Here have some water," she said.
"M..mmarry me," he said in between coughs. He looked cold in his brown overcoat with a thin T-shirt and jeans underneath; he was definitely underdressed for winter.
"Here take my scarf," she said wrapping her scarf round his neck and almost strangling him.
"Here, for you," he said searching his pockets and producing the same diamond ring Piak was wearing. "She took it out of my drawer and wore it. Kept me away for two more days and by the time I got back to Thailand you had gone. This is for you, only you," said Barry in a rush of words in between deep breaths and pants.
"Don't talk. Breath in. Breath out. Breath in. Breath out," she said calmly. He tried to say something but she hushed him and made him take deep breaths until he calmed down. He grabbed her hands but obediently breathed according to her instructions.
When his breathing became regular, she looked calmly at him and said, "Now what were you going to say?"
"You know you drive me crazy? It's just like when we did rock climbing together. You just won't follow the path I mark out for you. You just have to try to follow your own path to the top," complained Barry.
"You're not making any sense. What do you mean? Why are you here so close to your birthday?" asked Yaya feeling confused.
"I had it all planned. The live music, the dinner menu, the lights, the flowers and you fly off to England. Typical. Now, I have to propose in a cafe," grumbled Barry.
"Huh? What about the card, apologising?" Yaya gulped, staring at him like she used to in the game they used to play regularly.
"Oh you got the bunch of roses and card I left you before I went? Good, Piak said she would pass it to you.....oh...she did something to it didn't she?" he said slowly as she saw her expression change.
"Yes, she made it seem like you were apologising because you had chosen her...." said Yaya. Her smile brightened her whole face and for the first time in three days, she looked normal again.
"How could you believe her, silly?" said Barry.
"I didn't at first....she said she could offer you a brighter career in her dad's movie production company so...." she faltered as he stared at her shaking his head slowly and drew nearer.
"From now on, from this second..." he said grinning the same boyish grin she had fallen for so many years ago.
She burst out laughing.
"You will be my one and only, my last love. You're my beloved, my heart forever, and ever and EVER," he said yelling as he picked up the ring and held up her hand.
The lines were so cheesy, they could have come from a lakorn. In fact, they were.
"You don't have to shout," she responded predictably covering his mouth with her hands. "I've heard it already. I understand everything already."
He grabbed her hand covering his mouth and pushed the diamond ring into her ring finger and said, "Using your hand to cover my mouth won't stop me from speaking. You must use your lips and I will stop."
Before she could move away, he reached across and kissed her. When they parted, she whispered, "Are you crazy?"
To which he answered, "Yes, crazy for you. I wish to be with you until I die. I wish to be your first and last love.
And so like a true fantasy couple. They lived happily ever after.
