Chapter 1

I get up with a start, it's Monday. I slip an old t-shirt over my head and pull the pajama shirt out from underneath. I tip-toe out the room me and my sister share, jeans and sweatshirt in hand.

I get to the bathroom and change into my jeans. I hunt for the brush and eventually feel the bristles of the beat-up hairbrush. I run it through my straight brown hair and set it back down where my sister can find it easily.

I slip the plain black sweatshirt over my t-shirt and walk toward the stairs I pound on my bedroom door as I pass to wake my sister up. I hear her groan as I continue down the hall.

In the kitchen I grab my lunch from the counter along with a sandwich I made the night before. I wave goodbye to my mom as I pass her in the living room, she doesn't see me.

I grab my red backpack as I walk out the door. I finish my breakfast just as the bus pulls up.

The bus is loud, really loud. But I still hear Jerome yell my name. I slip into his seat.

"How you been?" He sounds like he doesn't know.

"Good. You?" I don't want to tell him if he forgot.

"Descent" He turns as one of his other friends asks him about a book he'd read.

I turn and face the window. All the normal houses pass by, mine looks the same as their's but mine is hard to see. A lot of my stuff is hard to see, including my personality.

Once the rush of kids slows down in the bus aisle I slip off. I blend with the crowd of hoodies until I reach my locker. I quickly pull out the math textbook and rush to the class. I get to my seat with everyone else and flip to the page on the board. The teacher drones on with the same instructions she gives everyday, and we get to work.

Forty-five wasted minutes of my life later I walk out of the classroom.

"Wait up!" Jerome runs after me and stumbles into the lockers next to mine.

"What?" He always needs something after classes.

"Notes."

"Here" I pass the notebook to him and turn to my locker. I pull out my lunch and English textbook.

"I have to go, you know my combination right? Just shove it in my locker when your done!" I run to my next class.
