why'd you only call me when you're high - arctic monkeys

it's been five months since anthony and tessa have last seen each other. they still texted sometimes, a simple hey or stupid joke.

tonight anthony planned on drinking to forget why he's been in a funk for the past five months.

"i'm so glad you're here, dude." anthony's smile grew, bro hugging chance.

"everyone misses you back in cali." chance paused. "especially a certain someone who can barely get a two word response from you."

"it's just hard." anthony admitted, resting his head in his hands.

"that is why we drink tonight, my brother! happy birthday!" chance grinned, filling up the shot glass to the top.

the two buzzed boys clanked their glasses, then guzzled the putrid liquor, instantly feeling it.

"tonight is going to be crazy." chance smirked, getting an uber.

[...]

many shots and mixed drinks later, anthony was definitely feeling himself.

two blonde bimbos forced themselves onto an uninterested anthony, causing him to storm outside of the club.

sitting on the curb, anthony pulled out his phone as it dinged.

from t👀🔥:
happy birthday toner, i miss you lots !! hope ur having fun tonight💕

anthony read the message and smiled to himself, wishing he was with her instead.

anthony quickly dialed tessa's number, he waited anxiously before she picked up after two rings.

"tony, hey!" tessa answered, her voice making anthony feel much better than any alcohol could ever.

"i'm really drunk." anthony slurred, stifling a childish laugh.

"what are you up to, my dude?" tessa laughed along.

"other than missing you, not much." the drunk part of him admitted.

"oh, um, where's chance?" tessa questioned awkwardly, unsure of how to respond to that.

"he's inside." anthony spoke in between hiccups.

"maybe you should find him and head home or something?" tessa suggested, knowing anthony likes to sleep when he's drunk.

"you're so smart, you're actually the smartest person i know." anthony rambled.

"okay tony, i have to go. it was really nice to hear your voice." tessa spoke, trying to hint she was ready to leave the conversation.

"oh yeah, you too." anthony chuckled drunkenly, hanging up the phone.

anthony took a few more moments outside, soaking up the cool summer air and cigarette smoke, watching the cars speed by.

"where have you been?" chance questioned, stumbling outside to meet anthony.

"just out here enjoying the fresh air." anthony exhaled a deep breath.

chance took a deep breath, inhaling the putrid scent of a nearby dumpster "bro, i think it's time for you to go home." chance chuckled.

[...]

anthony woke up with a pounding headache and a box of linguini noodles next to him.

the light peeking through the curtain shined directly in his eye, causing him to through a pillow at the window.

searching around the bed for his phone, he began to panic.

"chance, where's my phone?" anthony frantically ran into the living room to meet an oddly healthy chance.

chance smiled and gestured towards the table.

"i don't even really remember much of last night." anthony admitted, flipping through his phone.

"you were smacked. well, we were smacked. you just got the hangover." chance smirked, sipping his coffee and preparing to leave for his flight.

"dude, this has to be a sign." anthony looked at his call log, remembering the way hearing tessa's voice made him feel the night prior.

"hearing her voice last night literally felt better than when we saw cleveland in the finals."

"woah." chance gasped at the words leaving anthony's mouth.

"i'm coming with you." anthony smiled, searching for a last minute ticket.

"are you serious? what about all your stuff?" chance questioned, joining anthony on the couch.

"i don't know, man. i just need to see her." anthony hopped up, beginning to pack a small bag for his journey back to california.
