Prologue
"Are you sure this is the child?" the Alpha asked.
The human nodded. "Positive."
The Alpha gave him a hard look. "She is strong enough to handle our lifestyle?"
"Do you want her or not?" the human snapped.
The Alpha growled. This human was pushing his luck. He gave a short nod.
Within hours, the Alpha left the facility with a swaddled baby in his arms.
It was a beautiful baby girl, already with raven black wisps of hair and electric blue eyes. Her soft pink cheeks glowed in the cold winter wind.
The rough wind ripped across the Alpha's exposed skin.
He gripped the child closer, gently, as not to wake her.
When he reached his home, his wife immediately opened the door. "Did anyone see you?" she asked.
He shook his head. His eldest son ran into the hallway. "Daddy!!" he cried. At seven years old, Phoenix was the most excited to see his sister.
Houston, the five year old, carried his favorite book into the room and yet again began to read.
The three-year old twins, Austin and Dallas, tottered into the room.
"Lemme see!" Phoenix said, pulling on the blanket.
The Alpha ruffled his son's black hair. "Patience, my son."
The Alpha carefully unveiled the baby's face.
"What's her name?" Houston called.
The Alpha thought for a moment.
"Orleans." he said.
Orleans opened her eyes.
Phoenix looked at her. "She's really pretty," he murmured.
The Alpha gave a small nod. "Yes."
His wife nodded. "You cannot wrestle with her as you can with the other boys." she told her son.
His brow furrowed. "Why?"
"Because," she smiled. "She's human."
