CHAPTER 2
Shanti could only stare in shock at her father, but Nathan walked around her, careful not to touch her, and followed after her father like it was the most natural thing to do. He looked over his shoulder when she didn't follow suit.
"Aren't you coming? I think he has the answers to those questions we've been asking."
Shanti shook herself out of her little stupor and followed after him.
"Please, take a seat," Mr. Kincaid said, flipping on the light switches. "I was starting to worry for a minute, Shanti; you were taking much longer than your brothers to start reacting. I danced a jig when your mother called and told me about how you had started to change."
"Wait; I'm not following what you're saying, dad. And why are you here?" Shanti asked, taking a seat beside Nathan.
"Well, I had to come after the principal called me; he said that you were starting to show the signs of the beast taking over. You too," he said as an afterthought, nodding at Nathan. "I should have known that this was who would cause this for my daughter; your mother was a mighty powerful beast back in the day. You're father as well."
Nathan looked confused. "You know my mom and dad?"
"Why, yes. We grew up in the same city, went to the same school. But that's a story for another day." He turned back to his daughter. "Honey, this might be hard to believe, but you're not really human."
Shanti stared at her father, looking at him incredulously. "I'm pretty sure that I have two legs, two arms, a face, and no extra things on me." She said, starting to get mad.
"Well, of course you do. I mean, I don't think your mother would appreciate giving birth to five wolf cubs, would she? No, you're not human because you can shape-shift into a wolf. Or, well, I think you will be, after being trained."
"I don't believe you," she said, and instantly regretted it.
"You're brothers didn't believe me, at first; I should've known that you would be the same. Oh, well, nothing for it." And suddenly there was the largest wolf she had ever seen sitting patiently on the floor, tongue sticking out as it panted. Shanti muffled a scream and moved back, but Nathan looked impressed and moved forward, crouching in front of the wolf.
"Cool. Let me see; you did like this, right?"
And then there were two wolves, the second one larger the other, black as midnight, panting as well, though it was looking at Shanti with bright yellow eyes, beckoning her to join them. She was very close to fainting. The black wolf got up and padded towards her; advancing steadily; her back soon hit the counter at the back of the room, and she had nowhere to go. The wolf still kept coming; it was bigger up close, and the only thing that kept her from fainting was the wolf's hypnotizing eyes, keeping her attached to the world of the conscious.
It placed its front paws on either side of her body, its nose burrowing into her shirt and gliding over some exposed skin; the nose was cold. Her eyes rolled up into the back of her head, and she crumpled to the ground. She never hit the floor, though, as she was caught by the transformed Nathan.
"Whoa; steady there." He said, keeping his arms around her; she was glad, she didn't think she could stand up by herself right at that moment.
His eyes darkened as her scent engulfed him again. It had been easier to control, this feeling, when he had been in wolf form, but now it him twice as hard as before, when he hadn't known what was happening to him. Looking wildly at Shanti's father, he asked desperately; "How do I stop this? I can't control this anymore."
Mr. Kincaid looked at Shanti, and then at Nathan. "You have to mark her; you caught her, but you haven't finished marking her as yours yet."
To Shanti, it seemed like her father's voice was far away. The only thing keeping her conscious was Nathan's voice.
"How do I do that?"
"It's different for every couple. Don't worry; instinct will take over. I'll give you a few minutes alone." He stepped out of the room, closing his eyes as soon as he was outside. That boy was a natural, and very powerful. Hopefully his daughter would be able to keep him in check; otherwise... he shook his head. He wouldn't think of the consequences that would entail if Shanti didn't keep him in check.
Nathan looked down at the limp form in his arms. "Shanti?" he called out, worried when she didn't say anything, relieved when she moved in his arms and groaned softly. That groan did something to him... no, he had to mark Shanti, get rid of this... sensation he felt every time he was around her. These feelings were dangerous; he knew instinctively. It made him forget about anything and everything, even Shanti's safety.
"Shanti? I think I know how to make it so that you're not running away from me, and I'm not chasing you; well, to such an intense degree."
She nodded her head, leaning into him. He lifted her up onto the counter; he still towered over her.
"Okay. I'm going to mark you. Please, don't stop me; I'll be going on instinct here, I don't really know how to do this."
"Okay." Her voice was soft, barely there. "Please. Do it."
He stared at her, concerned, but closed his eyes and let the feelings he had been fighting back come to the surface. When he opened his eyes, his eyes were black. Her own eyes widened, dark as well. His lips skimmed over her face, went down her neck; soon it hovered over her pulse point; which was going haywire. He licked it a couple of times, humming in approval. She tasted excellent. He nibbled at her neck, and her head rolled back as she moaned quietly. This was where he had to mark her; he could feel it in his bones.
He nuzzled the spot lovingly, eyes closing. His dark hair was in his eyes, but he didn't push it away. One more loving nip, and then... Her eyes had closed, sinking into the wonderful sensations he had caused in her, but her eyes flew open, and her lips opened, letting out a silent scream. The pain... his teeth were buried in her neck, and he was lapping at the slight blood that was coming through the wound. She winced, and the slight movement caused the burning in her neck to increase; it was flowing through her body, traveling through her blood. With one more lick, he released her, and she collapsed on the counter, breathing heavily, small spasms running through her body.
His eyes were still black, and his tongue flicked out to lick at a drop of blood on his lip. "You are delicious, just like I thought," he said wonderingly, smiling at her. His mouth grew firm as he shook his head and tilted his neck to the side and said, "Now your turn."
She couldn't move, couldn't think. What had he done to her, this almost-stranger? Her eyes fluttered closed, but they opened instantly, filled with longing. She wanted something. She needed something. With a huge effort, she pushed herself up, arms trembling. She leant forward, allowing her hair to cover her bite mark. Nathan growled, and she froze, slowly lifting her head to look at him. He roughly pushed her hair back, saying roughly, "Don't you dare hide this. This means that you're mine." His eyes, which where impossibly dark, darkened even more. "That you're only mine, and no other's. Now mark me."
She couldn't fight the instinct anymore. Drawing her to him, she loving caressed his neck, nipping at his pulse point like he had done to her. His eyes closed, and he let out a sigh of contentment. She licked at his skin greedily, tasting him, revelling in him. Then... he stiffened, but made himself relax, though the hands he had placed on her arms gripped her arms tightly. She didn't care though. He tasted so good... and he thought that she tasted good?... a sense of possessiveness washed through her... she wanted more, but she had to stop; she knew she had to stop. Still... Redrawing her teeth slowly, she hastily licked her lips. He stumbled and caught himself, leaning heavily against the counter. A state of happiness washed over her, but she couldn't move, frozen, as something else overcame her.
Black spots were filling his vision; he was growing weak, but strong at the same time. Blindly, Nathan groped his way to Shanti, pulling her into his arms before doing something in his life that he had never done before.
He fainted.
