CHAPTER 5
"You have a car?" she asked in disbelief as Nathan led her towards a dusty black truck parked on the road. She hadn't noticed it before, but now she looked at it with awe as he unlocked the door and opened the passenger's side for her.
"Yeah, my dad bought it for me when I passed the test last year. I love it." He patted the hood affectionately as he walked around it to reach the driver's side, climbing into the truck and closing the door tightly. He placed the key in the ignition and the car came to life with a roar.
"I wish I had a car," she said with a sigh, "but my parents say I have to save up for one and get it myself. They'll help with the insurance, but otherwise, everything is left up to me."
"Really? What kind of car do you want?" He asked as they headed down the street and he executed a neat turn.
"I don't really have one in mind. Any vehicle I can get is good enough for me."
Nathan checked over his shoulder before changing lanes quickly. "Any kind, you say? Well... Waverly's selling her old corvette so that she can get some sports car or something. I'm sure she'll sell it to you with a fair price, if you want it."
Shanti looked at him, eyes wide. "Will she really?" she asked breathlessly, barely daring to hope.
"Yeah, she's been trying to get rid of it for a while, but Vanessa doesn't have her license, and Fraser uses our dad's Eclipse, and he's broke anyways, so..."
"You're being serious? I can't believe it! I'll have a car, so I don't have to take the bus to school anymore!!! Yes!!!"
Nathan smiled, stopping for a few kids to cross the road. "If you want a ride, just call me, and I'll pick you up."
She looked shyly at him, the tip of her ears pink. "Thank you. I'll probably do that tomorrow; Shawn's quota for the month is filled."
He pulled up into her driveway, parking safely and turning off the ignition. "No problem. I have a couple of other ideas, but I'll tell you later. Let's go see what your family found."
She pushed open the door and dropped down onto the pavement, strolling up the stairs to the front door of her home. She pushed open the door, allowing Nathan to slip past her before closing it softly. Padding to the living room, she called out, "We're here!"
"We're in the dining room!" her mother answered; she switched directions and headed to the dining room.
"What's going on that you needed me here?" she asked just before she reached the end of the hallway.
"Come and hear about it for yourself," Casey answered as they turned the corner.
Sitting in a chair was a tiny girl, with tired grey eyes and a long cloud of black hair framing a dirty and pale face. Her eyes widened in shock as her eyes met Nathan's. She hissed, hand flying to a scar on her arm, while Nathan growled slightly, hand flying to his mark. Rubbing it, he stared at the girl, unconsciously moving towards her until he stood in front of her. Dropping to a crouch, he eyed the girl, studying her, as she studied him, tracing her scar.
"I know you," he said, voice deep and slightly shaky. "I've never met you before, but I know you."
"I've seen you before, once," the girl said in a quiet voice. "I've seen you, but it was only for a second. Why do you have my eyes?"
"Why do you have mine?"
She reached out a hand to trace the shape of his eyes, brows furrowed in concentration. "Because they do. We all do."
