[ eight ]

-

Just let me touch your mouth today,
Just let me stop the clocks,
I will paint the world blue,
And I will make all of this just a dream.

as the next week came around, the two were back to their happy selfs.

ruby had eased up to ashton again, and though she told him they should take things slow, he could not contain his excitement when it came to ruby tuesday.

"hey ruby," he began, thinking they already knew plenty about each other.

"hm?" her brown eyes met his hazel ones.

"do you think..." he breathed out nervously. "that maybe today...you can come over and meet my mates? this is really important to me. they're like my brothers and they really want to meet you."

he reached across the table to hold her hand in his, his lovely hazel eyes pleading.

"well," came her excuse, "i have a lot of things to do later. so i don't think so."

suddenly, ashton thought up an idea. though he thought she could become angry at him, he needed to try it. he told her, "my mates went out and won't be back until the afternoon, do you at least wanna go over and see my flat? i'll give you a tour of my place." he smiled at her, but it was a fake smile.

she finally sighed in defeat, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "i guess i can visit for a bit, but i have to leave within the hour. i have a lot to do."

once outside the starbucks, she followed him as he led her to his flat. it wasn't far from there and they arrived in a little less than ten minutes.

ashton was about to unlock the front door when they heard teenage male voices coming from the inside. he turned to ruby to see her go completely pale in shock. along with the voices of the boys, they heard stadium crowd cheers and ashton assumed they were playing FIFA.

"i should go." ruby said and quickly turned on her heel to leave.

but ashton grabbed her by the arm, stopping her before she could take a step away from him. "what?" he asked, "why do you keep avoiding my mates? why don't you want to meet them?"

"i can't tell you." she said, trying to pull away from his grip.

"why not?" he said, his words sounding desperate. "what are you so afraid of?"

"i can't tell you." she cried.

"i have the right to know!"

she finally blurted out. "i'm not real!"

his heart sank. "what?"

"i'm not real, ashton." she told him, tears streaming down her face. "everything about me, its all in your head. that first day at starbucks, you wanted to meet someone and so your mind created me. its kind of like when a child creates an imaginary friend, you made me. and i love you with all my heart, but i do not exist. and if you had me meet your mates, they would think you're crazy. i just...kept putting it off because i didn't want you to get hurt."

but ashton wouldn't believe it.

he was in denial.

"that's not true." he shook his head.

"i wish it wasn't." she told him. her hand slowly reached out to caress his face and just as slowly, she leaned in until their lips met in a sweet kiss. "i won't be coming back after today. i'm sorry, ashton."

he was startled by the door opening and his mates standing on the other side.

"we heard yelling, mate." luke said, concerned. "are you okay?"

"yeah," ashton nodded, turning to where ruby had been standing, he was met with the view of an empty hallway, "i was just..."

"i thought you were bringing ruby?" calum asked.

but ashton shook his head in a daze, replying, "ruby isn't coming anymore."

and with that, he went inside his flat.

it was the eighth tuesday.
