Chapter 2: A Flying Ball

After my free period I had English, and that meant I could talk to my best friend, Zoey.

We only had two periods together that year and it sucked.

I entered the classroom, I was a bit early and there were just a few people. A few minutes later the teacher had arrived and Zoey was nowhere to be seen. I was about to send her a message when she opened the door with a red face.

"I'm so sorry, I know I'm late, it won't happen again." Mr Andrews nodded, handing her a detention paper, it was her third time arriving late this week and she always said it wasn't going to happen again.

"Where were you?" I asked her as she took her seat next to me. She huffed, glaring at me.

"I was looking for you! I left biology early because I was feeling nauseous, that crazy woman made us watch 3 videos of cows giving birth." I sent her an apologetic smile, our biology teacher showed us those kind of videos every year, she wanted to make sure all the new kids would watch it. "Your sister looked a bit disgusted."

"I was with Emma. And I have to tell you something, just promise me you won't freak out." She nodded and I told her the deal I had made with my cousin.

"YOU WHAT?" Mr Andrews turned around and glared at us.

"Am I interrupting your conversation?" We quickly shook our heads. "If you don't finish that conversation now I'll see you both in detention at 4 pm. And that means, Mrs Ross will get a double detention today"

We shut our mouths for a few seconds, we knew we wouldn't get a detention, he was actually really nice and apart from the fact that Zoey was always late and our unability to be quiet in class, we were very good students and we always got good grades.

"I don't like this." She mothed when Mr. Andrews turned around.

"I know, me neither. But I need your help." She seemed a bit reluctant at first, but she nodded and turned her head pretending to be listening to Mr Andrews.

After our English period we had lunch, on our way to the cafeteria we chatted about how excited she was for our friend Liam, and she didn't mention the Deal.

When we got there we saw Liam with Matt, Oliver (Zoey's twin brother) and Alex. Those were my 4 guy friends. Zoey was my only girl friend, I met Alex in kindergarten and we became close friends, a few years later Oliver and Zoey moved next to Alex and we all became friends. We met Liam and a our other friend Jack in middle school, but Jack moved to London 5 months ago.

"Hi guys. What are you talking about?" They looked at us and Alex threw a french fry at me.

"Don't be so nosy, Liv." I threw it back and it hit him on the cheek. He smirked, I knew he was going to get me back for that, even though he was the one who started it.

"Liam has been fangirling about his teammates for the past 30 minutes." Matt said, earning a friendly punch on the arm from Liam.

"That's not true, I'm just excited, I've always wanted to be on the team." Matt rubbed his arm and smiled.

"Oh Matt, you should've seen Levi, he's so fast, and Kyle and Connor are really good. And Noah, oh he's so handsome." He said that in a really high pitched voice and Liam hit him again.

"EWWWW." A very disgusted Zoey took a sandwich out of her lunch bag. "This is a cheese and eggs sandwich. This is not fair, why can't I have your sandwich?" She said pointing at Oli, who was happily munching on a veggie sandwich.

"I'm allergic to dairy." He shrugged and smiled, taking another bite.

"And I'm vegan! And I've always hated cheese"

They kept arguing about food, but I was no longer paying attention to them. I focused on the tall boy walking across the cafeteria. His dark brown hair almost covering his green eyes. There was no denying that he was absolutely handsome, but I didn't like him, and I still had no idea how I was going to make him fall for me. I noticed Emma was looking at me and she flashed me a smile.

I looked around the cafeteria, trying to find my sister, but I couldn't find her. That was her first year of high school and she wasn't taking it very well. She only had a friend back in middle school and she went to a private high school. I told her she could sit with us, but she told me she didn't want to bother us, so she just skipped lunch and she grabbed something to eat at home.

I felt something cold hitting my chin. I looked up and saw Alex smiling at me.

"Liam asked you if you were going to the game." I nodded. I didn't want to go there without Zoey, but I couldn't miss it, it was Liam's first match.

"I wish I could be there too! But I have detention." Zoey whined and I patted her shoulder awkwardly.

The bell rang. Great, I was too distracted and I hadn't gotten anything to eat, and I had left my chocolate bar on the bleachers. Luckily I only had two more hours left until I could go home.

When I finally got home I cooked something for my sister and I. My dad was working and I didn't want to wake my mom, she was a nurse and she had a night shift so she was always tired.

"Are you going to the game tonight?" She shook her head. "Come on! Liam needs us."

"He needs YOU, not me. And If I decided to go, I'd be all alone, because my only friends are my sister and my cousin." Ouch, they way she said that hurt. I didn't know how she felt because that never happened to me and I didn't know how to help her.

"Emma doesn't have many friends either. Why don't you hang out with her? And if you come with me tonight you'll have more chances to meet more people." She sighed in defeat, she knew I wouldn't take no for an answer.

"Can I at least borrow some of your clothes?" I nodded, smiling. I used to borrow my older brother's clothes when I was younger.

We went to my room after we ate our food. I threw a pair of shorts and a cute shirt at her. She was shorter than me but I knew that outfit would fit her.

I put on my black leggins and an over-sized sweater. It wasn't like I was trying to impress anyone. I was going to the game for Liam, not for Connor.

I looked at my sister, we looked alike. The most noticeable differences were the hair and the glasses. Her hair was really long and dark, whilst mine was shoulder-length and light brown. I had dip-dyed my hair red that summer, but the red color had faded long ago and now it just looked dirty blonde. And she also wore glasses and I wore contact lenses.

After that we went to the basketball field. We were early, but I promised Liam I'd be there, he said he felt better when we were around.

I tried so hard not to look at Connor, but it was almost impossible, he was shirtless. He'd always been handsome, but now that I had to made him fall for me, he was making me feel self-conscious. I looked like a potato compared to him.

I left Mia playing some game on her phone and I looked at Liam, who was now coming my way.

"You came! Matt said he's on his way. I don't know about Alex or Oliver." He bit his lip, tapping the floor with his foot. He was really nervous.

"I know you're gonna do great." He smiled and he put an arm around my shoulders.

"Connor's looking at me. I have to keep training, but thanks again." Liam left, and that's the last thing I saw before I heard someone yelling and then a ball collapsed with my nose. So much for not wanting to get Connor's attention.
